Mine is scheduled for next Wednesday - I was told that with light anesthesia and some spray antiseptic on the back of the throat it is should be an easy 5 minute procedure.

I had the EGD before surgery as one of my pre op tests. I swear this was the easiest test of all of them that i had. After they gave me the anesthesia in my IV...... I don't remember a thing. The next thing I know is that I'm awake and never felt a thing. I had no side effects whatsoever but a little bit of a scratchy throat. it was a breeze. The only thing you have to remember is to NOT eat or drink anything after midnight before the surgery and to stick to the diet that they tell you to be on the day before the procedure. I am so glad that i had it done as that is when he discovered that i had a small hiatal hernia which he was able to repair during the sleeve gastrectomy. Good Luck!!!!!

I was anxious too but it was a breeze. It felt a little weird waking up but other than that my throat was sore the rest of the day and I was tired. I went home and took a 3 hr nap.

I had mine last Friday.. They have you gargle with a numbing agent and then give you a shot in your iv.. I don't remember a single thing.. I was nervous too, but it was for nothing. Simplest test ever! :)

Does everyone have to get an EGD before sleeve surgery?

Had my EGD everyone was right! I went to sleep and a hour later I was leaving ! The only thing that hurt was the IV that left a huge blue bruise . I slept most of the day. I think everyone has to have one so the dr can get a sneak peak of what she is working with, and test for H pylori bacteria .

Why do they put you to sleep for this? Are you really asleep, or do you just get amnesia?

Hm, well, I'll be curious to see how they do it here in Germany. It doesn't seem like something for which anesthesia is really necessary; it's probably just nicer that way, and the Germans tend to take the rout of least intervention in such cases (ie. wisdom tooth removal with just novocain, pretty much never prescribing pain killers stronger than ibuprofen, etc.).

Cause if you were awake, you really think you'd let someone shove a camera down your throat?? :) I know I wouldn't!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
