Recommended Posts

I was knocked out, All I remember is seeing the surgeon walk into the room then fade to black. A slightly sore throat was the only side effect.

Hm, well, I'll be curious to see how they do it here in Germany. It doesn't seem like something for which anesthesia is really necessary; it's probably just nicer that way, and the Germans tend to take the rout of least intervention in such cases (ie. wisdom tooth removal with just novocain, pretty much never prescribing pain killers stronger than ibuprofen, etc.).

. I have a friend here in the states who had this done in Germany. They did not put her to sleep, sprayed a throat spray to help with the gag reflex and that was all.

Yup, sounds about right. Luckily, of all the things the Germans do medically that make me scratch my head, this isn't one I'm too worried about. I don't have much of a gag reflex (no minds in the gutter please!), and I tend to be good at mind over matter for this sort of thing. I'm honestly much more worried about not receiving enough pain meds after surgery...

Leaving for my EGD in about an hour - I hope it all goes as smoothly as everyone says it will.

Does everyone have to get an EGD before sleeve surgery?

I don't even know what it is, so I guess not! What is it and what's the purpose?

. Egd is an endoscopy. They put a camera down your throat and look at your esophagus and stomach. They look for hernias and can biopsy anything they need to- test you for bacteria. It's a crucial part to being sleeved.

Depends on the dr. My friend didn't . It gives a dr a sneak peek of what she will be working with . She will be looking for hernias and take a biopsy for h pylori bacteria . I didn't feel a thing and didn't have a soar throat

Just got back from test - no problems. Didn't feel a thing - last thing I remember was being asked to roll to my left side and then waking up in recovery about 20 minutes later. The actual test was about5 minutes long.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
