Pretty discouraged

Recommended Posts

I'm so discouraged I cried tonight...and that doesn't happen often.

I'm losing weight...and thrilled about that. But I'm still PBing several...no, not several - MANY times a week. The only meal that seems to go down without a problem is Breakfast, but Breakfast 4 days out of 7 is just oatmeal.

I spend more time on liquids from PBing, than I actually spend on real food.

While I am learning what "full" feels like, I still actually miss it by a bite or two from time and have a little PB, but that's ok, those I can live with.

It's the ones where I spend the next 15 to 20 minutes in the bathroom, wondering if this PB is the last one....oops, here's another...that are really getting to me.

I only have a .5cc total fill, that is now over 2 wks old. I don't think it's the fill because sometimes a meal goes down and stays down, although those days are rare.

I'm tired of feeling like I'm suddenly bulimic. My husband, a troubleshooter by trade, says perhaps I need to drink something warm before eating (since I drink coffee before breakfast, and breakfast stays down)...or even drink something at all, because it does seem like if I have something to drink before I eat, it stays down better. It sounds reasonable to me, and is one of the things I'm going to be trying in the next few days. We're going to start looking for the common denominator.

The weird thing is...a cookie goes down and stays down. fruit crisps go down and stay down. All the bad foods go down/stay down. *sigh*

He also thinks maybe I'm starting to tense up when I eat, anticipating that I will get sick, and by that act, making it so.

I'm really starting to get concerned, and am about to call my doctor. I'm afraid I'm not getting enough nutrition...afraid enough that I'm drinking Protein shakes again, just for the nutrition. I'm not losing my hair yet, thank God, but something has to give somewhere.

I'm just venting here, and I wish that I had heard more of the potential problems with lapband before I actually had it done.

Your husband is 100% correct!!

*warm first helps relax the stoma

*first bite syndrome DOES exist SLOW DOWN and nibble dont eat.

*anxiety/tension DOES increase tightness which increases PBs

*a partial glass of wine will also help especially if your going out and dont want to PB with a crowd.

*I dont get a full signal I get hiccups them BOOM TOO FULL!! I stop when hunger (Tummy growling) goes away.

I'm new at this but I'm feeling really discouraged, too. I'm not losing and my fill is at 3.7 cc. I know I eat too much, still. Do you think I should have more fill put in? I had the band put in last November.

I'm sorry, I don't understand the concept of "first bite syndrome"...could someone elaborate?;)

Peace Out

I can eat 2 tacos from Taco Bell, I can eat a whole sandwich. I'm probably grazing too much and I find that I'm think about food and eating more than ever. I had hoped that the lap band would help me take my mind off of food.

Thank you all (again!). I've got a bit more hope again. So with first bite syndrome, you just walk away from the first bite for awhile, and then proceed cautiously? Or do you take 15 minutes between every bite?

I walk away and come back and all is better. When you start eating take a bite, wait 3-5 minutes and take another. Sometimes if Im having trouble I get up and clean the dishes , get drinks or little kitchen errand type activities until my stoma relaxes. Sometimes I start the dryer or fold a load of clothes and then all is ok.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
