Strength Training OK at 3.5 months out?

Recommended Posts

I am 3.5 months out and my cardio workouts didn't seem like enough, so I bought a bowflex.

Do you think it's too early for me to start strength training ?

I started full workouts at the gym at 1 month. To be sure though, consult your Doc.

Unless you have some other issues you should not have any restrictions after 30 days post op. The incisions are really the only thing that limit you after surgery. Once that is healed you should be fine.

My doctor said not to do it until 6 weeks - you should be fine.

At week 5 my doc said I can start training for the Olympics. Lol. Just phone your doc's office tomorrow.

I will be 3 months on the 21st and I'm starting insanity classes tomorrow. I'm excited and nervous.

By the way, I really enjoyed strength training because, after just a few weeks, I noticed evidence of improvement that I could see in my every day life (plus I developed biceps!). Since then I've switched to Pilates, which strengthens and elongates muscles, and I enjoy that even more.

As a non-trainer, but a practitioner, I have four suggestions (I'm assuming this is your first time with strength training, but don't know):

1) Concentrate on the exercises that strengthen your "core" - abs and back.

2) Use your abs during every exercise

3) Each time you work out one muscle or muscle group, also work out the opposite muscle or muscle group (e.g., biceps and triceps).

4) Skip a day between working the same muscles.

Have fun and let me know how you like the bowflex!

I am loving this Bowflex machine. When I was young and playing football, free weights were my preferred option, but at 54 and only looking for toning the Bowflex is great.
