May 2007 Banders

Recommended Posts

I was banded on May 9th and had my first fill on June 12th. I'm experiencing a lot of the same issues as a lot of other new bandsters such as not being able to eat well in the mornings and if I eat a healthy lunch I feel sick afterwards but dinner time I feel like I could eat 10 times more than what I should be eating.

I did, however, mess myself up because right after my surgery I was drinking mostly nothing but gatorade and drinking Ensure High Protein and the doc said that could've slowed my progress down.

Hey Everyone!!!

How is it going? I had my first fill yesterday. It was not bad at all, doc gave me a shot to numb the site, felt like a bee sting. I felt only a slight pressure after that. It was not bad at all. I was talking to him about the banster HELL, and he said it was a good thing, you want that. He said it means you are healing properly, all of your swelling is going down. I trust my doc, he has been banded himself. So I trust him to know what he is talking about. I am on liquids for two days and then a few days of mushies. I now have some restriction and the hunger is not there anymore. I feel like I did right after surgery.

Hang in there guys, I know what all of you are talking about when it comes to the guilt, and worrying about food. I thought I was going crazy. That is why I love this site. My doc said remember, there is nothing off limits, just take a few bites and move on. The band is to help you eat less, and it is for the rest of your life. How many times have we been on diets where we would say "this is a lifestyle change" and could not stick to the changes in the diet. Well we now have a tool, and we can do this. ONE DAY AT A TIME!!!

Well atleast your doc was kind enough to give you some numbing.. I had to get my fill with nothing for pain and they missed the port site not once, not twice but THREE times and it wasn't fun at all.

OUCH!!! I am so sorry you had such a hard time. I guess it helps that my doc is banded himself, and he knows what we are going through.

I really wanted to go, but I have my 5 yr. old daughter w/ me today at work. I work close to the Med-Center, but live close to Baytown, so it would be to hard to take her all the way home. I wonder if I take her with me it would be a problem??? Are you going??? My first fill in tomorrow....very excited! Have you been to the support group yet???

Sandra

Just checking in.......not whining about port pain this time!!!

The port pain is finally gone and I feel great!! The weight loss has slowed a bit or should we say not moved in a week. I went to the gym tonight for the first time in about 2 years. I did the elyptical (SP) for only 12 minutes and 15 minutes of weights. I was going to do a few laps in the pool but it was too crowded. Its a slow start but its a start!!! woo hoo

I am so happy to feel well enough to exercise because I know that is going to be the key to losing!!!

I hope everyone else is doing well, thanks for posting about the first fills!

Mine is scheduled for next week but I am not sure I need it, I still have lots of restriction.

Got up this morning and decided to strip (did everything but shave my head....and you guys KNOW what I'm talking about here! hahahaha) and climb on the scale for the first time in 3 days. I've been sitting at 200.4 all week. Lo and behold! 199.0!!!!! My Goodness, I haven't seen those numbers in a decade or more! WOW:eek:. I still don't believe it. I think it will be gone by noon....it's just a dream! Well, my mini goal was to hit Onederland by the time I went in for my first fill....day after tomorrow!!!! YIPPPPPEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!:biggrin1::scalesno:

Welcome back to the thread! Congratulations on your success, that's awesome!!

Helllo to all, I have been lurking and reading, but haven't posted much lately. I got my first fill yesterday. I talked to my dr and found out I have a small ap band. He said I also had a micro port. I guess that would explain how he missed it! I got 5ccs in my band. I was supposed to be on liquids for 2 days, then softs, then wait about a week to try food again. Well I blew that tonight with a piece of pizza. So much for restriction, I ate the whole thing. I am really having a bad case of buyers remorse. I felt really restricted when he was doing the fill, but now I feel no different. I am just having to use tons of will power to diet. I have not lost any weight in two weeks.

Sorry to be such a downer, I just know some of you may be feeling this way too, or have suggestions!!

Thanks!

Today was probably my hungriest day yet since surgery. I am proud that I didn't succumb to it though! I had an extra Protein Shake and that's it! My fill is coming up on the 28th and I'm excited for that to happen. I read someone else's comment on their first fill was that they again felt like they did after surgery...just not hungry. I'll take that, even if it doesn't last all the way to the next fill. Baby steps here.

I had a kind of alarming thing happen to me last Thursday. I had started to work out on the Monday with my only restriction being "no abdominals" per Dr. Edwards. By Thursday, I was getting a sharp, hot pain near my port that continued through Friday (intermittently). I also noticed a round raised bump about an inch above my port site that I assumed was my port (and it had moved!). That really got my attention and I called the Dr.'s office who worked me in for today.

Well, it turned out the bump was just a "bruise" and the pain was from the increased activity of working out. He said my port was still right where it needed to be and I was VERY relieved to say the least. I had just about worried myself sick over the weekend. I searched in here for "port pain" and got about a thousand hits. lol Anyway, I felt kind of bad that I had over-reacted, but the Dr. (who I adore) just said, "If you are concerned about something, I want to know about it." He also said before he left the examining room, "This isn't the first time someone thought the very same thing." So, anyway, short story long, if you start working out and have a pain, it might just be the muscle by your port. Don't freak out like I did! :-)

He also said I was doing great (he said that twice!) and I have lost another 4 pounds for a grand total of 28 pounds (17 were pre-op).

I was wondering, since we now have our own forum, should we maybe start some sub-forums for topics like fills, etc.? Maybe it would be easier than this looong thread? Just a thought.

Best wishes to those who are still struggling with post-op pain.

Ginger,

I am going in for my first fill this morning so i dont have any experience yet. How many cc's does your band hold? My doctor told me that if I got a fill and did not have a noticeable amount of restriction within the first week and a half to call for another fill. Otherwise, I would be waiting 4 weeks for my next one. Just a thought, you may call your doctor and tell them the problem!

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
