May 2007 Banders

Recommended Posts

Hey Crabcake,

Less than a week to go! I know you are excited. Aside from pre-op dieting, (my dr. does not require) what are you doing to get prepared? Any other May Banders can "weigh" in on the subject. I've bought liquid Tylenol, Gas-X and chapstick. Stocking up on flavored waters, broth (better than boullion IS good) Carnation Instant Breakfast and Kool-Pops. Any other suggestions?

Hers's a great post for post-op check-list of things to have on hand.

How are our May 1st and 2nd banders doing???

I got a call from the surgeon yesterday and they don't feel my bladder infection will delay my surgery next Monday. Yea!!!

Frankly, if I had had to start the liquid pre-op diet over, I'd have gone postal!!

I just got my date, May 31st! I'm barely a May girl and this thread will be slowing down by the time I'm banded...Will I be a May or a June girl?

I had my pre-op today for my surgery Friday. I was told if my blood pressure was as high as it was today they wouldn't be able to do the surgery. Of course, that has me in a panic and it will only go up if I can't stop that mode. I am going to cut out all broths, etc. and can only hope that helps. I have some meds from a year ago left I was thinking of taking but not sure it would help in that short a period anyway....anyone have any suggestions?

Macysgranny....

You're doing the right thing by staying away from the broth... or anything with loads of sodium...

I would double check with your Dr about the meds....make sure they arent on the list of meds to stop taking....

At one time my BP was 192/97.... I started walking daily and today it was 110/78. I was told it was most definitely due to my recent exercise...

So...my advise... go low sodium, lots of Water, daily exercise (even if only 10 minutes), and try to relax...

Ooooh... You better talk to your doctor before taking the year old medicine. He'll know what to do. Even if it postpones your surgery to get your blood pressure under control, that would be much better than the complications that could come up! I know that's a bummer, but better safe than sorry.

Should I bother getting tested, or just deal? I don't know, but I guess if I can usually control my limits, or maybe try lactaid it would be fine.

Maybe it's something else in it, or like you say, the amount. Is it sugar free? I know that sugar free candy or gum made w/ xyletol (sp?) has a laxative effect on some folks. Can you try something else or is this what the doc put you on?

Thanks twinmommy!

Macysgranny, I wuld give your PCP a jingle and ask what to do about the meds, and I second the advice (and third it, even) to walk even a few minutes a couple times a day (it made a huge difference for me in about ten days), to cut out as much sodium as possible, and add grapefruit juice (it's a natural diurectic) if you can. Drink lots of Water and as a lst point, are they using the correct BP cuff? If you use too small of a cuff, it will read a high BP. The cuff should comfortably go around your arm and the velcro should overlap by a large portion. If it is straining to stay on while they are pumping it up, it's too small.

Aside from pre-op dieting...

Hey Amy! Yes, I'm getting excited. Fortunately my doctor doesn't require the pre-op diet either, but I'm trying to eat light anyway...can't hurt! Like you, I'm stocking up. I'd copied out the checklist, but haven't purchased much. I wanted to wait until after I see my doctor tomorrow for my last visit. HealthNY is our other 'band mate'. I say here's to us and all the other May Bandits! :clap2: :cocktail: School lets out soon and I'm going to work my tail off (literally I hope!) so I'll look better when we start back in the fall. We're lucky to have such an inspirational group! :high5:
