Surgery in Feb, Weightloss at a standstill?!

Recommended Posts

Hello!! This is my first post on BariatricPal. I had gastric bypass on Feb 26, 2014 and feel great, sometimes a little tired but overal very good. HOWEVER, I am 2 weeks and 2 days out and I have only lost 9 pounds and then gained a pound . I can't believe that I am at a stand still already. Has anyone else experienced this so early on?

Heidi... Many of us did that! You will lose some surgery weight in early days.. Then it will come off and stay off as long as you stay on the exact plan from your surgery team! Trust the process.. I am 4 months out, down 66 but became so crazy about the numbers on my scale that I actually had to have it hidden from me! Lol

Much less stress when you just enjoy all the simple new adventures your headed for! Join our Friday weight in threads.. Measure on your monthly anniversary only and enjoy the new clothes!! Congratulations.. It just gets better everyday from here on.... Dyan from Ohio

Yes! I had that happen and posted about it too. I'm two months out. And the first week I lost about 9 or 10, then went to about a half lb a day, then nothing for 12days! In fact I would go up a lb or 2, then down, but couldn't loose anything for 12 days!!!!!! I was so frustrated. How is that even possible? So I increased my Protein intake. The Isopure flavored bottled drinks are helpful for me. I mix it with half Water and half a bottle and lots of ice. They're 40 grams of protein a bottle. So, I'm finding if I get in 80+grams of protein! it helps. Once that stopped, I'm still going slow. I've lost 9 lbs in a month. I don't why it's going so slow, I'm exercising and doing everything right, but I've just resigned to the fact that maybe it'll take me longer... It's.a journey, focus on doing what you're supposed to do and it will work. Be patient. There's no getting around the frustration though. It's why I've always failed too because I would say "what's the point?" And dig into the Cookies. Now we can't do that, so we have no choice but to hang in there and consider it a journey. Also, I find that with the protein, if I can get milk in, I loose better too. That's always been the case for me though and it seems to be the case now too. Hang in there and trust the process. :)

Thanks Iynetta! It is super frustrating. I started walking at the gym over the weekend so hopefully that will jumpstart my weightloss again. I also started to track my calories because I want to be accounted for what I am eating and be truthful with myself! Getting in the Water and protein is pretty hard for me and I have to say, I have not back down from my love of coffee and wine....and so the journey goes on. I had a lapband done in 2007, removed it Nov 2013 and last month had my bypass. I feel like I have been down this road already (and have) so for me to not lose weight rapidly makes me wonder why I went through the surgeries altogether. Keep up the good work Iynetta!

Stay strong Heidi. It sounds like you're doing great. I don't know about the wine, I worry about getting an ulcer, so I'm staying away from the wine and coffee for now. Hang in there, and don't give up. Even though we've had surgery, there are still obstacles as frustrating as they may be, we can't let the obstacles beat us! Good luck and keep us posted

Relax, that's not a stand still yet. Your still healing, your first few weeks is Water, surgery weight etc. Give yourself time. I felt good at 2 weeks, worse at 3-6,. And awesome after 6 wks

Did your doctor explain to you while you felt worse during weeks 3-6? That's pretty interesting!! Keep up the good work!

Heidi, yes.. as we heal the tissue is sore.. while we begin having BMs it passes over the left side and touches the surgery area.. so right before we heal seems worse.

My surgery was February 10, so I'm not quite 6 weeks post, and I've lost 19 pounds. I was freaked out - I thought I'd lose 35 or 30 or some huge number like everyone else does!

I haven't. No changing it. I just keep doing the right thing, and I know the weight will come off!

Hi Heidi! I had my surgery Feb 24th and can sympathize with you. So I've taken my doc's advice not to weigh myself more than once a week. Ups and downs can be discouraging. My scale and his office scale are pounds apart - so I'm waiting to see what I weigh there in another 2 weeks. I'm only tracking what their very accurate scale says. Our bodies use up huge numbers of calories at first when we're healing plus I wasn't able to drink much so I expect I "gained" Water weight when I got my liquids up to 8 cups/day. Hang in there - we've added a new tool to our repertoire and we'll succeed in the long run.

Thank you all! I'm so frustrated right now. I lost most my weight in the beginning. Before I started to eat real food. Now I'm at a month stand still.

I'm feeling much better and have more energy but not loosing any weight. I go up two pounds then down two pounds. Ugh

Did you take your measurements before surgery? If so, have you taken them lately??

Heidi, it sounds like you're telling my story. Lol

2-1/2 weeks of the same two pounds was very discouraging but finally I started loosing again and 7 weeks out I'm down 41.5lbs. I still have the up and down numbers but I look at the graph on MFP and it's steadily going down. That's a big encouragement.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
