When I spoke to my surgeon as well as my primary doctor, Gas-X seems to be the one of choice. This is OTC, and it's safe to use on a daily basis if needed.

CVS, Wahlgreens carry OTC Omeprazole, pepsin etc. This will help drastically. :P

Target also carries it OTC. Cost is not that bad for a 3 month supply. I find I still need to take 1 20 mg dose daily, even at almost 2 years out. I will be reminded by sleeve if I forget.

Just a question to those taking the acid reducers, are you having reflux or taking it to keep your hunger level down?

I get reflux at night and take a Nexium at bedtime. However, I had reflux before VSG too. I have also found a Tbsp on organic apple cider vinegar in my first glass of Water in the morning helps a lot with reflux. Takes a bit of getting used to but it adds to your gut's population of good bacteria apparently. Seems counterintuitive but it has helped me.

FYI Gas x does nothing for acid. Helps with gas pains and gas on the bottom side. But you need a PPI for acid. I hear Prevacid is a good OTC one. But I just called my PCP and got a 3 month supply of Nexium. That's the best. If you know anybody in Mexico they can send you some pantozol you don't need a script there it's the same as Nexium. Works good. Also get the B Vitamin injections if you can. They are cheap and you give yourself an injection once a month. If your close to the border it's worth it. Or if you're on your way there for surgery pick that stuff up before heading home. Your Dr. Will help you.

There are a lot of OTC acid reducers you just have to find what works for you personally. I started with Prilosec and it didn't seem to help. I was still getting hunger and pains. I switched to Pepcid AC and its worked great for me. I take 20 mg twice a day and don't get those horrible hunger pains or the stabbing pains I was getting before. Just try different ones and you will find one that works for you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
