lylabelle 257 Posted March 14, 2014 I'm curious if you never really had heartburn or acid reflux and now you deal with it daily?
Christian Zaccone 243 Posted March 14, 2014 Its the most common side effect of the sleeve... I never had it and now i do.. but its controllable.. for me i have learned if i eat dont ever ever lay down for at last 1 hour if not WICKED WICKED reflux!!! So its been like 9+ months since surgery and i just follow that rule and it is like clock work.. Luckily I have only had it 4 times and it all happens if i eat and lay down to quickly.. Hope this helps. PLus you should be taking some sort of Pepcid. Chris
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted March 14, 2014 I had mild reflux before the sleeve but since I had my hiatal hernia repaired during sleeve surgery, I haven't had it once since.
Texasmeg 568 Posted March 14, 2014 I started having heartburn a week or two after surgery and started taking Prilosec. Two and a half months and I haven't had any more problems (but still take Prilosec). I will try going off of it after a few months.
Vixynne 695 Posted March 14, 2014 I had reflux before my sleeve surgery. I hit a point where even a glass of Water at bedtime would cause acid to back up into my esophagus and wake me up in the middle of the night. I was taking Tums like candy. Post-op, I was put on a twice-daily dose of chewable Pepcid, which I stopped using at about the 2-month mark. I haven't had any acid issues since. If you start having reflux issues, give your surgeon or PCP a call; they can prescribe a good PPI (protein-pump inhibitor) like Prevacid, Nexium, or Prilosec.
