lylabelle 257 Posted March 14, 2014 I'm curious if you never really had heartburn or acid reflux and now you deal with it daily?
Katcloudshepherd 630 Posted March 14, 2014 Hello and welcome, I was on prescription Nexium before my surgery on 12/11/13. I had an upper GI prior to surgery and had a hiatal (sp?) hernia repaired during surgery. I continue to take my prescription Nexium at night to prevent any acid reflux. I have fallen into bed too tired to get up and take it---with no ill effects. I'd wouldn't trade taking prescription Nexium every day for the weight loss. The osteoarthritis I have in my knees was SO much WORSE before my surgery. They still hurt BUT not nearly as badly as before. The pain I experience from my herniated and slipped discs in my back has decreased so much I don't even need the prescribed topical pain killer gel. So yes, I have to take prescription Nexium but I wouldn't go back to the way things were period. Kathleen
BabySheldon 158 Posted March 14, 2014 I had GERD, but it was from the low dose of Metformin I used to take....now I have straight up heartburn....my sleever GF told me that it goes away when your hydrated...Its not often unmanageable, but its very strange to me because I never dealt with it before! As always, consult your medical team! Shel
BKLYNgal87 503 Posted March 14, 2014 Acid reflux post-op is probably the most common complication of vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Studies point to as many as 30% of patients have it for a couple of months, some end up with it longer term. I never had it pre-op, now I need to take a daily PPI. Most days it does the trick by itself. Hopefully I won't have to live with it forever but it's a small price to pay. 15 lbs from goal!
