protein shakes

Recommended Posts

I am preop and having a real hard time with the Protein shakes. I find they taste like flavored dog food. They have a Vitamin flavor to them, which makes me sick. I have tried mixing them with both Water or milk. In fact, I had Syntrax twist cherry mixed with cold Water the other morning and I threw it up. However, I have an issue. I have to purchase Meal Replacement shakes for after surgery from the doctors office. They give a choice of Bariatric Advantage, Celebrate, and powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury. Can anyone recommend any good flavors to me besides chocolate and vanilla? I also have the option of getting Unjury unflavored. The only flavored Protein shake I like so far has been Syntrax strawberry mousse. I started my preop diet on Monday and have already lost 7 pounds. I don't see the doctor again until April 7th.

http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/261167-list-of-bariatric-nutritional-companies-offering-free-samples/

Try the above link, it's a forum here under Gastic bypass forums, go pretty far down the page and there's a forum for nutrition. Each person is different as far as taste. I've also read many comments about how things you like before surgery will make you sick after. I've gotten a lot of samples that I'm waiting to try afterwards. Also, I don't know if your aware, but you can see if your insurance company will pay for Insure Nuritional shakes. If you go to thier website it walks you thru the process. They do all the work for you as far as getting a scrip from your surgeon and getting approval from insurance. It's always worth a try. There is a thread here about it. Search for "Insurance paying for shakes" (I think that's what its called) Best of luck to you.

Hi Jennifer, I am also on my preop diet, but I have already been on for a week and a half, I had to buy my preop diet from my doctors office too but they didn't give me a choice like you have I had to get the only one they had which is metagenics, and they only give you chocolate and vanilla shakes and the vanilla is gross, and the chocolate is ok, I take the chocolate one and add Peanut Butter to is, um yummy. I hear though that the Unjury is a good one and not expensive at all. The one I got with 10 days of shakes, the Fiber stuff that is nasty, and the Vitamins was $230. I don't have to buy my post surgery stuff from them, as I use the whey protein from Walmart only $15.00 and it's got 30 grams of protein per scoop. Well good luck!!!

Try Optimum Nutrition brand. I have tried several flavors and none have had the Protein taste. They mix very well too. I get mine from Amazon.< /p>

My favorite shakes before surgery were RTD ones from Sam's Club called Premier Protein. Since surgery I have tried so many different shakes that I consider myself a expert on Protein Shakes. LOL. Here's my favorites:

Synthrax nectar Brand - 23 g Protein ** overall this is my favorite brand of protein **

Fuzzy Navel: 4 stars -- it's good -- and if you mix it with crystal light orange, it really tastes like tang.

strawberry Kiwi: 3.5 stars. I liked this a lot for a while, but it is a little sweet for all the time. I mixed it with strawberry lemonade crystal light. It is VERY red -- so not good for right after surgery.

chocolate truffle: 5 stars. I mix this with unsweetened almond milk. It is very good -- not to sweet or thick. I can drink this every day. It tastes like chocolate milk.

Cappuccino: 4 stars. I mix this with unsweetened almond milk and ice for an iced coffee taste a lot like my old dunkin donuts. I haven't made it hot. It's not too sweet and has no caffeine.

Double Stuffed Cookie: 5 stars. It really tastes like you are drinking oreos. I mix with unsweetened almond milk. Feels like a cheat but its not!

Vanilla Bean Torte: 4.5 stars. This is very good mixed with almond milk. It has a wonderful vanilla flavor. It's disgusting mixed with Water.

Muscle Milk Light (RTD) 20 grams of protein

I tried both chocolate and cake batter. I can drink them, but I don't prefer them. There is a strange chemical taste to them that I just don't care for.

Oh Yeah! (RTD) 32 grams of protein

I had banana and strawberry. I loved them both -- and they felt very satisfying before surgery. They are larger and thicker than other shakes. After surgery, the thicker aspect bothers me and they taste too sweet. They may have been my favorite, however, pre-op.

Designer whey (powder) 21 grams of protein

I used both vanilla and plain. They are not tasty, but they work well as an ingredient in recipes. They are also pretty cheap.

Click Espresso Protein 15 grams of protein

I used the Decaf mocha. I really wanted to like it. I just don't. It's strong and clumps.

Isopure 44 grams of protein?

I tried the iced tea flavor and the grape. This is the only protein I couldn't even finish. I really wanted to like it -- but it literally gagged me. Other people swear by it though!

I hope this helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
