5 Months Post Op, Revision Needed

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I am five months post open, sleeved October 7, 2013. I am down over 100 pounds since surgery date. I lost just under a 100 pounds by my three month post open date, which was amazing. I felt and do feel like a whole new person. The past 6-8 weeks I've been a bit more sensitive to foods. I still get in my Protein, but my food sensitivity is pretty extravagant I guess. Had some testing done, and yesterday and a full Endoscopy where they gave full anaesthesia in case I needed balloon dil plus they wanted to do extensive evaluation on the stomach. Well, the outcome? My stomach is very much twisted, twirled and 'kinked'. I asked myself and the Doctor how the shell this could happen, especially since I've done what I am supposed to and have been so successful! Well, it turns out that because my weight loss was so rapid and successful it actually caused my new pouch and inside to twist and dance. I was shocked, and scared because I've never heard of this. I spoke with the Doctor extensively, and revision surgery is needed. Got the call today and go in Tuesday for surgery. This is not common and happens in less then 0.02% of patients. Just know that losing so much so quickly could have this possible effect, although rare, still possible. Now I will be a revision patient, and have surgery again, and go through it all over again plus more. I'm staying positive and I wish everyone the best. I just wanted to briefly share a little bit of my success story, as well as the negative effect. I will say, NO REGRETS, never felt better! Hope everyone is doing well, pre open and post open.

Wow, how shocking! I'm glad they figured out there was an issue now when you're essentially well and not after some blockage and/or other type of complication, but wow! Wishing you well on your upcoming revision surgery and healing process. Please keep us updated.

Thanks! Yes, I consider myself lucky that it was figured out now and not further down the road when it led to more complications. I honestly thought the sensativity was normal, as part of adjusting my new stomach to foods. A little to sensative though it turned out. Thanks for the well wishes and I will keep update

Hi:

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope that your revision works out well. You've been so successful so far. I'm sure you'll continue to do well because you've come so far and done so well already.

I've never heard of a sleeve revision. What do they revise? Please educate this community by sharing what you know and how you proceed through this revision.

Thank you.

Sue

Hi Sue,

I have to get a sleeve to bypass revision, it will be fixing the stomach, as well as doing a partial bypass. They don't do a full bypass with the rerouting of all the organs they would for a full bypass, but partial. I was very much not for the bypass, that's why I had the sleeve, so this takes an emotional toll on me even more so because at this point I really don't have a say or option. I'm just trying to maintain a positive attitude with the 'everything happens for a reason' attitude. It will be laparoscopic, and they said they will try to go into the incisions from when I had the sleeve (I really pushed that one), but I may have an extra on or two. Because of the way this one is done it is unlikely. I am very happy with the healing of my scars from the sleeve as they are pretty much non existant. My recovery will be a couple to few days in the hospital, three day prior liquid diet (only had to do a day for the sleeve), as well as doing post op diet as if I was getting the full bypass. I was made aware this surgery has only been done once by my facility which draws extra concern and anxiousness, as this is a newer procedure. The one person that has had it has had an great out come.

Don't stress yourself over it! I lost A LOT , and did so VERY rapidly. There's such a low percentage of it happening, the last thing you need to do it worry about this. Keep up with your progress and get in all the Proteins and whatever your doctor says. Congrats on your weight loss and keep up the good work!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
