Pain when drinking/eating

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am post op 7 days today and I had a small hiatal hernia repair as well when I was sleeved. I had my upper GI done and they noticed that my liquids weren't going "through" very fast into my stomach and kept me another day in the hospital. So, my concern/question is, has anyone else experienced this slight pain a few seconds after drinking shake/water/broth about mid sternum right in the middle. It only last a few seconds but it is pretty sharp.

I haven't had any issue keeping anything down, but I don't get in as much as I should be. My surgeon feels it is just an issue with inflamation since I am able to keep things down and not feeling sick.

Just looking for some comfort from others that might have experienced the same issues as I am with the liquids moving down slowly. The gurgling and weird sounds in the process too are strange.

I see my Weight Management tomorrow for follow up and on the 19th follow up with surgeon. Thinking he may test for leak again, however if there was a leak, I think I would know it????

I also had a hiatal hernia repair and I would have to agree with your surgeon. I experienced the same discomfort you described and it lasted about 2 weeks. I mean, if you think about it, it make sense. They just yanked your stomach down below your diaphragm, sewed the diaphragm tighter around your esophogus and cut out 85% of your stomach ... yeah, there is going to be some discomfort swallowing ...

The gurgling and strange sounds, though, continue, though they lessen.

I had that exact same pain at first and had a hiatial hernia repair as well. At three months out it's gone (unless I eat too fast or eat eggs ) and I never had any other complications,

I am at 15 days out and I'm just out of that pain feeling. I think it takes about that long for the swelling to go down. I had to get a shot of Toradol early on around day 5 or 6 for some relief.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
