Does food get stuck if there is no fill in the band?

Recommended Posts

I hear about things getting stuck and was wondering if food gets stuck when there is no fill in it. I have heard of some people taking a break and getting completely unfilled, so I was curious. Thanks

That greatly depends on the individual, the size of their band, the thickness of their stomach wall and the size of the chunks they are swallowing. If you were to forget to chew well and swallowed a decent sized chunk of hot dog for example you could easily get stuck even with no fill. It is imperritive to chew chew chew and take tiny bites even before you have any restriction.

Yes, it can happen. I had awesome restriction without a fill for months after surgery. I had to eat much more carefully during this time than for the following 8 or 9 months while I had 4 fills. Even after 4 fills I didnt have restriction equalling what I had had in the first 3 months. Its only now after my 5th that it feels anything like it did initially.

I didnt get anything stuck during this stage but that was because I was very careful. The newness of surgery and the novelty of it etc meant that I didnt stretch the boundaries one single bit.

It can (at least for me), but it's rare. Happens for me a couple of times per year. Usually it's gigantic hunks of meat... which to be honest, aren't really my thing anyway. Happened with a hotdog too. More likely to happen when I'm menstruating or preggers.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
