thank you for your help :) I am going to be getting the Obama care but the low income Medi-cal and I didn't know if the low income medi-cal insurance covers wls.... I unfortunately cannot afford to finance the wls on my own...If anyone who has medi-cal and has had wls covered, please give me a little insight on approval or what wls was covered I would really appreciate it!! thanks :)

I have Medi cal and my sleeve was covered. I started the process last Jan and was sleeved in June. It wasn't a battle at all.

That is soo great to hear!! Do you remember what criteria you had to have? like BMI or anything else? I am really considering wls but I have many questions and I am also worried about possible complications later in life?

I had a bmi of 41 but no comorbidities. I'm not sure what their requirement was. It was a very easy process and I had no out of pocket. I'm very grateful because this surgery changed my life and I never would've been able to afford it on my own.

Thank you so much for talking with me, I really appreciate it. I think my BMI is something like almost 46 :/ yikes! I still can't believe I let myself gain this much after losing 75 pounds a few years ago, all I was doing was diet and exercise but unfortunately I gained it all back...I want a tool to keep the weight off for good and I feel like the sleeve looks like the best option for me. Congrats to you on making this big decision! If it's ok for me to ask...how much have you lost since your surgery? is it hard to keep on track?? Also how was the recovery and the recovery time? thanks again for the advice and help!

What state do you live in? Individual states determine if they cover wls or not. I would suggest you call the 800 number and ask them directly what benefits your plan covers. I don't have medi-cal, but I am a medi-cal provider. Many states, such as New York and California now require insurance companies to cover WLS but other states like Minnesota and Connecticut do not. Good luck!

I have Medicare and Medi-Cal. Medicare will be covering 80% of my surgery and Medi-Cal will be covering the remaining 20%. I hope you're covered. Keep us updated. :)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
