Stacyann81 31 Posted March 10, 2014 So I got horrible news today, my insurance will cover the surgeon and surgery but not the hospital stay. I called the hospital and they said they will not make payment arrangements because the surgery is elective. I had to stretch my budget to be able to pay my portion of the surgeons fee and don't think I can pay the hospital upfront. Does anyone know how much the hospital stay runs? the lady on the phone would not tell me. I'm so depressed, I've worked so hard to get this surgery, made all the lifestyle changes and did everything I was told, and now I might lose the surgery! Doing It 4 Them 84 Posted March 10, 2014 Why would your insurance cover the surgery but not the hospital stay? That seems so weird! Where do they expect you to have it?
enjoyinglife 313 Posted March 10, 2014 My insurance didn't cover the $150 a day it costs for me to be in a room, luckily I was only there a day and a half. They didn't charge me for the half day.
LindafromFlorida 1,542 Posted March 10, 2014 If they do not know how much it will cost you then how can you pay up front? I would be talking to some different people at the hospital doctor's office, and insurance company! Good luck!.
Dorian 683 Posted March 10, 2014 Call again and talk to someone else. If they expect you to pay upfront, they should be able to quote you the price. Keep calling until you get someone who knows wtf is going on! Don't give up;You need to be your own advocate! Good luck and keep us posted. 1 wilbskinny reacted to this
terry1118 1,274 Posted March 11, 2014 If you can't swing the hospital cost can you maybe get a personal loan to pay for it?
music1618 879 Posted March 11, 2014 Sometimes your insurance company will only cover certain hospitals. The hospital my surgeon wants ex to do the surgery wAs not under my plan. They changed hospitals and I had no problems. 1 wilbskinny reacted to this
wilbskinny 11 Posted March 11, 2014 I don't have personal experience as my surgery isn't scheduled yet, but I would #1. Appeal the decision by the insurance not to pay for the hospital stay. Get help from your Surgeon's staff in preparing the letter. #2. Call the hospital back--they know how much a stay would average. They may not be able to guess whether you'll have any complications, but they can definitely tell you the average cost for your surgery type, and stay. We have to advocate for ourselves!
