Band to Sleeve on Mar 20th in Dallas

Recommended Posts

First time poster. Like others, I'm starting to get a little nervous. I assumed the recovery would be like the lap band I had 7 yrs ago - home the same day. I found out last week that I might have to stay 2 nights. Besides having my son, I've never stayed overnight in a hospital.

This whole surgery has been brought on quickly and I haven't had the luxury to do a lot of pros/cons. They are pretty sure I have Crohn's and further testing found 6 ulcers in my esophagus so my Lap Band dr said it has to come out now. He consulted with my gastroentologist, sent it off to my insurance and received approval in about 10 days!

Reading everyone's stories has helped some!

Monica

Welcome - this is a good place to learn about recovery from the surgery. Your stomach has to be protected because the surgery is to the stomach, so there are additional steps you have to take when you get home. Your doc and nutritionist should fill you in, but mor info. is available here.

Who is your doctor and where are you having the surgery? I'm in Dallas and went to Dr. Cribbins. I had the surgery at Presby Plano. I had a very good experience and, at about 2.5 mos. out, I've been very happy I had it done. Good luck and keep asking questions.

Hi Monica... I am also in Dallas and had my revision ( Gastric Bypass to Sleeve) done on 2/10/14 by Dr. John Alexander. My approval was very quick as well about 2 days actually...and just like you I was approved so quick it's like I didn't even have an opportunity to think very long about "NOT" doing it. I was a bit nervous..( hate being put to sleep) and excited all at the same time. I came home around 5 pm on the 12th so my stay was about 2 1/2 days. My procedure was done at Forest Park Medical center... and my stay was very nice..the staff was great.

I can tell you now..that I am SO glad I went through with the revision. Everything has been going extremely well. Today marks 1 month since having surgery and so far I have lost about 25 lbs (pre-post/surgery combined). I love the fact that I can no longer stuff myself..or over eat. I only eat now...because I need to eat..not because I want to. The restriction is great.. still getting use to eating and sipping slow. When they say chew your food 22 times before swallowing.. they mean it.
You can not eat or drink at the same time and you really have to space out your bites. I try to wait at least 3-5 minutes between bites and sips. Other than making those adjusts while eating everything else has been great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
