My last thing that I need to do before being approved by insurance company is to get my cpap machine and see the pulmonary doctor on Tuesday. At first, his office said that I would need to be monitored for 30 days before I could even be approved for surgery. When I called my surgeon's office, they said that as long as I had initially seen the pulmonary doctor and was using the cpap machine, they would send request for surgery in. I did not have to wait another 30 days. My question is, how does the pulmonary doctor monitor you on the machine? Can they take readings on it while I am at home? A bit confused! I am praying I get a surgery date of early April! Fingers crossed!!!!

Why would you not use a life saving device? I don't understand...

Just a note: they can tell if you've just left in running or actually used it by the compliance data. sleep apnea is one of the largest killers of the obese. A surgeon who requires this is doing a good job.

They told me to bring my mask and didnt use it either but it would not have worked with the cannula anyway...

what do you mean you "don't get on with it"? If it is the mask, it takes a while to find the right one

Yep I agree! Luckily I don't have sleep apnea but my mother does. The last three years she didn't use her cpap because she lost weight and the mask didn't fit. She was compliant for years before that. She now has memory loss, her heart is in bad shape and kidneys failing. The dr believes it is getting worse all because of her not getting enough oxygen at night. It is a life saving tool. For those who need it, please find a mask that works and wear it. I am devistated that my moms lack of compliance has turned to this...

As a Respiratory Therapist I can tell you that sleep apnea puts incredible stress on your heart. Not wearing your cpap is no different that not following other Physicians orders. You are only harming yourself which show immaturity and irresponsibility for doing the beat you can before and after surgery. Just like blood pressure medication, exercise, getting enough protein: just do it!

My husband had to take him machine too. When you have surgery the meds are so strong that your apnea is worse. . They can't control your apnea so they will have you use your machine in recovery if they see your having trouble breathing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
