My name is Jeff Hollomon. I am getting banded on 4/5 in Blackfoot, ID. I have read as much as there is to read, but I am still nervous. Any advice going in?

I am also getting banded on 4/5 in NY. I have done the grocery shopping, cleaned the house, done all the laundry and I am getting manicure and pedicure on Tuesday. I still feel like I should be doing something else. I guess it's nerves. Good Luck.

One concern I have is that I have been on the pre-op diet for 8 days.I was restricted to 705 cal a day, and I have not done well with sticking to it. However, I have lost 12 pounds. Is the weight loss a sign of success, or will I have to reschedule?

I don't know but I am down 11 and have been pretty strict. The doc said fatty foods are not good for liver now, so I guess depends what you've been eating?

I have had some high fat foods a few times. I still have 4 days, and I wonder if I can rescue myself. I guess I'll find out. I wonder if he will cut me then sew me up if it is not what he wants.

I don't think so. The way it was explained to me, the idea is to constrict the liver so it's not hanging over the retractor during surgery. Yours just might hang over a bit making it a little more difficult to manuver. But some doctors say there is no way you can shrink a liver in two weeks so who knows! I doubt they won't do it at all.

i guess the other weird thing is that how would he know if it was shrunk at all? they have only done a pre-op chest xray. either way....

do not forget a magic bullit and cream Soups to whip in it. I thinned mine with soy milk and split pea has lots of Protein too. A magic bullit or similar gadget will be your best freind for the next six weeks.

hi jeff, i was banded just this past friday 3/30.

one thing.....everyone' experience is different. i found many things i read on this website to be very helpful and some things didnt happen. so dont get scared. i was deathly afraid of gas pains and didnt get them. i didnt even think about nausea and was on all 4's at 1:00 am the night i had operation. however as soon as i took tums...it was all right

i suggest following the pre-op lists on this web under "pre and post operations thread". they were very helpful

in addition to what people said before me...i needed :

liquid tylenol

Tums (my nausea was horrible the first day)

liquid Vitamins

thermometer

also a pillow and blanket for the ride home was great.

i also brought loose clothes to come home in.

2 things i didnt have but wish i did were:

ginger tea for the nausea

heating pad for left shoulder pain (but tylenol helped this)

anyway if you get nervous...just think about all the positive people that have had this before us.....that's what calmed me down

keep us posted

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
