Have You Lost Your Cravings For Foods You Can No Longer Tolerate?

Recommended Posts

I keep reading about people whose sleeves do not tolerate certain things well such as beef, pork, and bread. I am wondering...for those of you who have lost your tolerance to foods that you previously loved, have you also lost your cravings for them?

I would image that if a certain favorite food consistently makes you sick and uncomfortable you would start to view that food in a negative light and loose your cravings for it. I am hoping that is how it works.

Just curious.

I would say for the most part yes. Once you have something that doesn't agree with your sleeve, you'll realize it doesn't "feel good" to eat that anymore. I'll give an example. I used to love grilled cheese sandwiches. I would eat several at a time. Post sleeve -like many others- I realized bread is not something I can do; I had a 1/2 of a grilled cheese once & it made me so uncomfortable. I haven't wanted one since. Lol

I don’t crave per say but I remember and if others are eating things like rice etc I do think oh mannnnn
But I was a major rice junkie pre op anyway so yes I miss rice but I don’t crave it.
I miss eggs a nice boiled egg with soldiers mmm yummy!
But yeah I don’t wake up in a cold sweat jonesing for it.

I used to enjoy eating bread, especially prior to WLS. That was probably my downfall. I had it once in a while after I was banded. Not a lot, of course, just a nibble here & there. Now that I'm sleeved (about 7 weeks out), I don't even crave it. I don't think about it, and if I see it, I don't even want it. It doesn't really phase me. Weird, huh? I'm OK with it since it's not the best healthiest option anyway.

Ok, so maybe I am the exception but I am craving everything!!! I am almost 2 weeks out from surgery, and I want to eat everything around me (as we speak my fiance is eating sushi right next to me and I almost want to tackle him and take a piece lol :P) I have seriously been craving carbs though.... all carbs; waffles, crackers, toast, french fries (the reasons I had to have surgery in the 1st place) Please tell me it goes away...

Glad to hear that most of you are not ready to kill someone over a steak or sandwich.

Nelle, maybe you need a little more time before those cravings go away? Maybe once the junky carbs are completely out of your system, (which I have read is about two weeks) and you have one or two bad experiences with rice you will loose your cravings as well.

Personally, I am worried about steak. I love love love a good steak. I buy a 1/4 beef from my farmer neighbor that is unlike anything you've ever eaten from the grocery store. If my sleeve just flat out won't tolerate steak anymore and I still crave it, I would be miserable. If the sleeve rejects the steak and I develop a mental aversion to it...well then I won't be mourning the loss of a good steak. So I guess my first hope is to tolerate steak well, and my second would be if I don't tolerate it then at least I won't crave it.

You can crave all you want. But you will be miserable if you attempt a bite and it doesn't go down properly. Remember you're still swollen and sore. You don't want to do permanent damage.

At over a year past surgery I do still have occasional cravings for sweets (donuts, chocolate etc.). This usually happens if I have something sweet and carby and that starts the cravings up again. If I am eating clean I do not obsess about sweets. As far as steak goes for me I eat it about 2-3 times per month and it goes down just fine as long as I don't eat too fast about 5-6 ounces is fine, filling and a source of Protein I wouldn't worry about indulging steak cravings occasionally as long as you are at the point to eat solids.

I agree that eating more sugar and carbs spikes the cravings more. If its steak you want, its a texture thing for the sleeve. I am fine with a meatball but have a hard time with tough meats or grilled meats with a drier texture. If I do a roast in the crock pot, I am good and can eat it very slowly. You will find other things you kike and you will not obssess about food as much. It really becomes less important. However, I have not tried a steak solo yet. 4 months post op down 50 lbs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
