Has anyone heard of this group? If so, please share any info you might have please!!!

There are no lapband support groups in my area, so I was wondering how this would work?

I still cannot control my eating so I have got to find myself some help.

Let me know if you have information....

Thanks!!!

Hello,

Yes I have heard of OA and attended off and on over the past 20+ years. I have been looking for a meeting in my area that I could attend. OA is based on the same 12 steps as AA (for the most part.) When attending OA I found support from many different "varieties" of overeaters, eating disorders etc. There were very overweight individuals, anorexics, folks who had gastric bypass surgery etc., I felt at home and knew I "belonged." The meetings are based on a spiritual - not religous - program - big difference. I would not have continued to attend OA had it been a religous org. The meetings are sometimes held in meeting rooms in churches - but not "in" the church. I'm considering getting the band very soon. And will probably continue to have some food issues - so I'll probably find myself in a support group. If a lap band group is not available - I'll go to OA.

Yes I was a member of OA for about six months. It was held at no cost at the Unity Church in my area. There is a book very much like AA and yes, Houstonwehavea said it right when she compared it to the twelve steps of AA. It was beneficial to me to a point and I would encourage anyone to try it. They have their own recovery language like most groups with addiction.

Hope that helped.

I attended a few OA meetings several years ago and it wasn't for me. Granted, I am not much of a group effort weight loss person, though, either. In fact, I have always done better on my own than going to WW or TOPS or any of those sorts of things, so maybe it was just me. The few times that I went, it seemed to me like people were 'blaming' their weight problems on family and other situations and not taking any personal responsibility for their own behaviors. I found it to be kind of depressing, actually.

I was an OA member years ago. I lost weight and felt great, then the group was gone and of course, as was always the case, I gained it all back. It is based on the AA 12 step program. The group I was in didn't have anything to do with any type of "religious" dogma. Of course, different groups do different things.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
