Endo wants to bump up insulin!

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon,

I am now three weeks out-down 25lbs and total of 38lbs since I had to lose some to make the insurance requirements. All my blood work that was done last Saturday came back great, except for my blood sugar. It was 185 for fasting. I took 3 units before bed as it was 169. My bariatric surgeon placed me on a sliding scale for the insulin.

So my endo calls me. She's not happy with that number. She wants to add either metformin along with the insulin being bumped up and maybe long acting insulin at night. WTH? The reason I did this surgery was to get off all these darned meds. In three weeks, I am feeling better than I have in years because I am not on all those meds. I am actually sleep fully the whole night through. They were the death knell for me.

I am walking-targeting 10,000 steps per day-last week I walked 18.79 miles. Not too shabby. But my numbers aren't budging on the blood sugars even after a hour on the treadmill and bringing my target heart rate up to 130. I don't get it. I am very frustrated. I don't want to go back on those meds as they all have weight gain! Then I may as well NOT have done this surgery. She says it to help me heal faster. Bull. I don't buy it at all. I just want to sit and cry. I am so sick of having type 2-that appears to never go away as others have.

Anyone else in this boat?

Nell

I'm so sorry you are having this problem with your diabetes. I am also type 2, 2-1/2 months out and lost 30 lbs. since surgery. Before surgery I was on Lantus 45 units, 2 glucovance and 1 metformin a day. I'm now down to 25 units of insulin and only 1 glucovance a day, my fasting sugar is in the 90's and in the 120's before bed. Since you are only 3 wks. out, it might take a little longer, but don't be discouraged...it will come down. My A1C also dropped from 8.9 to 7.4, which is still high so I'm also hoping for it come down more to the point where I no longer need the meds. I'm with you, I did this surgery because of the diabetes, also high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I'm also sleeping better and do not need the CPAP anymore.

Good luck, don't get discouraged, you did the right thing by having the surgery, just give yourself a little more time.

Betty

I understand your frustrations. I had type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes so I had to deal with Metformin and Januvia and all the blood sugar testing. I also have PCOS so weight for me has been a real struggle. I had to do insulin while I was pregnant both N and R. The night time waking to pee the constant up and down on the blood sugars making ya feel terrible.. BUT.. I don't have type 2 anymore and my PCOS has improved some since surgery. In the hospital I was on insulin but once I went home (3 days) I didn't need diabetes medication anymore and I feel great most of the time. I still on occasion get too low or too high but I can tell when something is wrong and I watch it and see what I am doing that is effecting it. Things are a lot easier to control after surgery sweetie. Hang in there and be strong!

Good morning,

Thank you both for the words of encouragement. I was on 15 units twice a day of Novalog, 30 Units of Lantus, 2000mg of Metformin, 10mg of Glipizide, 1.8 Victoza, 10mg Lisinopril and 88mg of Levoxyl. I had what I called the death cocktail. I was put on insulin in Feb. 2009 when I shattered my ankle-it's to help diabetics with bone growth. Well I never could get off it on my own. I do hope that I don't have to go back on any of these meds. I was so tired all the time. I now have energy again. They also gave me Levoxyl to bump up my metabolism. I didn't have a thyroid problem at all. My lab work after not taking it for almost 3 weeks last week was normal. My BS was 185 for fasting. I'd taken my 3 units that day too before the labs. It's coming down slowly. But dang, I hate giving myself needles. I just want to be normal again. :(

I am 2 1/2 months out. I stopped all Type II Meds the day of surgery on my own because blood sugar tested low. I just had an A1C blood test and the results were shocking to me at 12.(should be 7 or lower) I have never felt better without the meds in years. I'm hardly eating and have increased exercise, how can my blood sugar be so high? I am crushed, as I don't want to go back on those awful meds with all the pains, etc. I have lost about 38 pounds so far. What do you think would happen if I skip the meds? I have no signs of dehydration or vision issues.. I don't want to go back to the doctor for Type II Meds anymore. I am trying to better myself why is this still happening? This has floored me, what more can I do. I'm also on a 1 month stall. I'm struggling each day to stay positive by reading this forum. So tired of the struggle.

I am also a type 2 diabetic and 2-1/2 months out. Like I stated above, I am still on Lantus 25 units, but I have stopped taking the one Glucovance since my sugar was dropping too low during the afternoon, like in the 70's. Also, I woke up in the middle of the night with it down in the 50's. I don't think you should just stop all meds without consulting with your doctor, especially with an A1c of 12, it could be dangerous for you. Don't be discouraged, I have also been on a stall for 3 weeks. I know how you feel, though, I did the surgery for the same reasons of yours. One good thing is that I no longer need the CPAP for my sleep apnea, so I am thrilled about that.

From a former New Jerseyan, stay strong and don't give up, I'm hopeful it will only get better for both of us.

Take care, Betty

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
