I haven't gotten a surgery date, but I believe it will be beginning of April. I can't explain how I feel..I'm very optimistic that this is what i HAVE to do.. but I am so scared.

-How will I get past the pre-op diet

-Will I be ok out of surgery

-How much pain will i have to endure (I have 2 children and can't really stay still too long)

-Will I adapt to the first month post-op (with liquids and such)

-Will I loose weight?

-Will I be able to not eat Carbs (like I do now).

-Will I be the one with the complications from surgery?

I have a phobia of feeling weak, and helpless..I hate that feeling, so I keep thinking, will I feel weak on just liquids and soft foods? Will I be able to handle this?

I can't help but think all day and all night...I can't stop obsessing. A part of me is mourning things, like having a good time with a drink in my hand. Going to a family dinner and not being able to enjoy the food as I want to.

I'm sad, scared and hesitant, but YET I feel I have no choice but to do this.

I'm 275, 5'7 I am 39 years old............... I will be ok right??

Hi hopeful, you will be fine. I have had these very same thoughts and I am 51. My surgery date is the 21st of this month but was changed to the 25th. I feel this is the greatest gift we could have for our condition. All the thoughts and feelings we have are normal. Before you know it we will be recovering & on our way to a new life :)

like you i was scared to death my surgery was the 18th of Feb. yes the pre is a little difficult but just keep thinking how long it has taken you to get this far, and few more weeks and your new life begins.. the operation wasnt as bad or pain ful as i expected. and the post operation diet is fine because you arent hungry.. may sound strange but you really arent hungry . i have lost 35lbs so far.. just remember to drink plenty of fluids, and walk walk walk you will do fine..

Most people are afraid before the surgery. Of course, you are having surgery and surgery has its own risk and it is scary. But stay positive. keep yourself busy..idle mind is dangerous. :} I had the same concerns as you. Especially with this surgery. I am going to be a success with the sleeve, etc etc etc.

But it seems as though your gut is telling you (like me )..this must be done. Think of it this way..at our weight prior to surgery or a pre op diet. We were at danger with our health..so what is worse..getting a tool to help you get healthier or stay unhealthy and still be in danger.. Do the best you can on your pre op diet..prepare for surgery to ensure you have the necessary things in your house for after surgery..It will here before you know it. Wishing you the best and keep us updated on your progress. Logging on to this website often will be helpful and motivational.

I understand what you're feeling, children can be tough after any kind of surgery. Just because you're doing this, doesn't mean they won't still need care, feeding, and comfort.

I worry, too, but in a different way. My children are grown, but I work full-time and care for my mothers endings and weekends so she can stay at home as long as possible. She's at end of stage 1 Alzheimer's.

My surgery is Wednesday (March 12) and I certainly have moments when I wonder what the heck I'm doing. I'm on my second week of the pre-op diet and I was hungry the first couple of days. But then I remembered that this diet is going to help the doc and reduce the chances for complications. Getting the toxins out before surgery will firm up my liver, whether it was swollen or not, and make the surgery easier for the doc. Believe me, I want to make his job easier if I can!

Similar thoughts fill my mind at times - will I ever eat the foods I loved before? Will I be able to care for my mom soon after surgery? How much pain can I expect. Who will care for me if there are complications?

But I always come back around to the reasons I want - NEED - to do this.

- I want to be healthy.

- I want to regain stamina.

- I want to walk for hours in the mountains.

- I want to shop anywhere but the plus-size shops and departments.

- I want to live longer.

- I want to look in a full-length mirror without disgust and shame.

- I want to wear short sleeves and shorts in public and feel good about my appearance.

- I want my feet, knees, and hips to stop hurting.

- I want my cholesterol to reach normal levels.

- I want to sleep without a c-pap contraption and sleep meds.

- I want that "Rocky" feeling when I know I'm much more than I thought I could be.

- I want to change my life!

I know I'll be uncomfortable, maybe even hurt a lot. But I've given birth, had an appendectomy, a total shoulder replacement (thank goodness for titanium!), had a root canal - and lived through it all. I know I won't be able to eat all the same foods, but I'm looking forward to new foods. I can't wait to feel what my new body can do. I'm 58 and going on 40. :-)

Hmm. I started this to help you calm your fears, but I've given myself a pep talk! Look, only you know if the pros outweigh the cons.if you make the decision to have the surgery and you've gone through all the steps to get there, focus on the success that's coming. Be proud of your decision. Be proud of who you you are and the wonderful thing you're doing for yourself and your children. You will be fine. You will be better than fine. You will be awesome. I wish you all the best.

I had my gastric sleeve surgery on 2/26 & am so happy I did it $ I feel great. I followed the pre op diet faithfully & sane with post op & I have had minimal pain, no nausea or gas. A little heartburn if I drink too fast.

I am sure you will do fine. I am down 19 pounds this morning since starting Pre-Op Diet. I was up 6 after the surgery which is normal. Good luck

I have been reading for about a week on this site, and it's filled with such honesty and so much information. Thank you all for the support and the great insight you have provided me with.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
