Absolutely it can, that is a major impedance of the diaphragm and lungs. You do not want to go into surgery with any type of respiratory problem as it could cause some difficulties for you. I went into surgery without any type of known problems but I must have had a hint of a cold because I had problems. When I woke from surgery I had a lot of congestion in my lungs and was constantly having to cough. Not good on your stomach right after surgery. My pulmanologist was called in and she had me on breathing treatments every 4 hours and some other meds plus I ended up staying in the hospital and extra day which was an added expense. Do what is best for your health. Delaying the surgery a week or two to ensure a safer and easier recovery would be the wise thing to do but please call your surgeon and discuss this with them so they can give you their medical opinion before you are on the table. elfnow 277 Posted March 8, 2014 Coughing is pretty normal after general anesthesia, but you don't want your lungs to be compromised for this surgery. How bad is it? Do you wheeze when you breathe? My advice is that you dose up on mucinex (just the plain mucinex, not -D or -DM) all weekend and see how you feel Monday. If you've cleared up on Monday, just keep tabs on it. I do have mild asthma but hasn't flared in a long time. Just coughing some. I'm a nurse and I feel like coughing is generally good after surgery, as painful as it is. We make patients cough if they aren't. I'll see the anesthesia group for preop one Monday. I'm planning to sleep all weekend. I don't really feel bad, just tired. Just wondered if others had been forced to delay? This time of year, it's hard to stay well. I'd probably tell myself to delay too. I just don't want to!
