Hi everyone! I'm just starting out on my VGS journey. After many hard fought attempts to shed this weight on my own, I've decided to look into WLS. I'm 28 years old with a BMI of 40 at the moment. I'm going to a information session at my preferred hospital (Cleveland clinic) to get more info and weigh (no pun intended) out my options. This is a very scary decision. I have a friend who just went through VSG in October and he has had amazing results and says it's the best decision he's ever made. So here I am! I have a 3 year old autistic daughter and I just want to make sure I live a full life to best care for her. I can not live my 30's the way I have my 20's. I'm

So glad I found this app and group! I have UHC with the custom care medical plan through my employer (Estée Lauder) same as my friend. So here's to hoping for an easy approval!

I work with high school kids that have autism, and it is not an easy job. My heart goes out to parents of children with autism, or any disability, I can't even imagine how difficult it must be. But they can be such a joy to be around, I love the students I work with! Anyway, congrats to you for looking into this option, I know it is not an easy decision to make. I had my VSG done two weeks ago and I am lucky enough that I had no complications or issues with getting food or Water in. I am very happy with my decision! :) Good luck to you!

I have a child..well a teenager who is almost an adult... with autism as well. Kuddos for working on yourself too. Sometimes as parents we forget to do so.

PS When you struggle and feel like you aren't doing enough for your child remember there will come a day when they will show you all that hard work wasn't in vain.

Here too I have a 15 year old with sever autism. Plus a 21 and 13 year. I had my come to Jesus moment 18 months ago when I decided I didn't want to die from something stupid that I had some control over. I had insulin resident type 2 and was on max oral medication that was not really working. I am also an RN so I know what it's like with shots. No way! So sleeved on May 1, 2013 went from 310 down to 177. Have met my goal and I am off all my meds except Vitamins and thyroid med. we need to live as long as possible for ourselves and our kids with issues! So here I am down to what I weighted when I had my first kid. Feel great! Keep up the journey for yourself and your family!

Hi

I also have a daughter with special needs, she's 23 and has Williams Syndrome. I'm pursuing this surgery because I need to be here(and healthy) for as long as I can and it's way past time for me to look after myself, too. As caregivers it's often hard to realize that caring for ourselves isn't selfish. Good luck to all!

I also have a child with autism- he is 9. I love him dearly but it is a stressful life. I am hoping the surgery is the tool that enables me to be healthy for many years to come so I can be there for him.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
