shoregirl 0 Posted April 1, 2007 Hi Everyone, My Surgeon said I might have a hiatal hernia...the GI guy wasn't certain...has anyone had one? what causes it? Surgeon said he'll repair it while he's in there. Also, has anyway had a BMI of 50+ and had the surgery and was successful...I seem to see much lower BMI's. Be well
maudeispam 2 Posted April 1, 2007 My BMI was well over 50 when I started. It is still high, but slowly getting it down to a healthy range.

Be well I had a huge hiatal hernia that was repaired during my lap banding surgery. I'm not a doctor but I've done some research and they can be caused by a number of factors; genetic tendency and obesity being two big ones. I think mine was caused by 9 months of being sick when I was pregnant and obese. My hernia was so bad I was suffering from anaemia, severe acid reflux and difficulty in breathing when I undertook any exercise. My surgery took 3 hours and the recovery was 3-4 weeks and was quite uncomfortable. However since the repair and banding I feel the best I've done for 10 years; in fact I didn't realise how bad I felt beforehand. Best of luck with your surgery! TRANAM1955 1 Posted April 2, 2007 I had been told 15 years ago I had a hernia but nothing ever came of it. HOWEVER ...after surgery, Dr Kuri asked if I knew I had one and I said kinda. He said, well it has been fixed. I thought that was pretty awesome. :hungry: :guess :think :embarassed: :girl_hug: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :angry :sick :speechles
