Fear of food... Moving away from purees

Recommended Posts

So, tomorrow i am supposed to actually try food.. you know that thing that you chew and use a fork for.. I am beyond nervous. For the first time probably in my life I am afraid to eat. I fear that I will eat to much, that the sleeve won't work. I will gain weight.. and the list goes on. Is this common? I know I am not consuming enough calories at this point to possibly sustain my body, and I just worry. Any insight would be so appreciated.

Weigh your food. Start with about 2 ounces. Chew it up good. You'll be fine. Don't drink for 30 minutes. You'll like being able to get in Protein without necessarily having to do shakes and stuff. My favorite is a Chicken/mushroom stir fry. Very high in Protein. Enjoy.

IMO a little fear is good. It will keep you from over doing it. As suggested above, measure your food and definitely don't go over. Tiny bites, chew really well and anytime you try something new for the first time do the 2 bite rule. After 2 bites, stop and see how it agrees with you.

Good luck! I'm sure you will be fine.

I am glad you posted this....I was talking to a coworker this am....and she asked when I start solid food and I said next week....then I looked are realized it is 5 days away and I am scarred....I had one incident so far of vomiting and do not want another and that was not even from food.....I had to add 4 new pills to my day and took one at a time(one at a time) and it was too much for my sleeve so now I split them up through out the day....any suggestions on what to try first would be appreciated.

I am absolutely scared to death to try solid foods. I are a small piece of chicken on day 3 like an idiot and the memories of the pain are so vivid I don't think I want to eat solids again. So I understand. Let us know how it goes.

Some tips - chew, chew and then when you think you can't chew any more - chew again! Tiny bites and lots of chewing help your new stomach to get used to solid foods again.

Choose each food carefully and reintroduce things one at a time. If after two bites, your stomach doesn't like the food, stop eating it!

Don't rush to a full menu on day one. It will take quite a few weeks to get in to the way of eating again. It's a big step but it's also exciting as you are moving to a new normal where hopefully you can have a good relationship with food.

So don't be scared, stick to the plan - and you will keep losing weight even if you eat :-))))

I, too, was scared to death to move from purees. If you go to my profile and look at my very first status update, I post, "Fear of eating solids ..."

http://www.bariatricpal.com/statuses/user/113438-pdxman/

I was pureeing a lot of Soups, so I just pureed them less. As his been pointed out already, chew really well taking ridiculously small bites. Wait a couple minutes before taking the next bite. Don't drink anything. There is nothing wrong with taking an hour to eat.

The first "solid" I had was some tuna mixed with ranch. I would put about a teaspoon on a square of sharp cheddar cheese. Probably took me close to 10 minutes to eat the whole thing. It was one of the most wonderful things I have ever eaten in my entire life.

I am so very thankful for this forum. It is so comforting knowing I am not alone in this. To hear the vets, and to also hear reassurance that what I am experiencing is not completely uncommon is quite encouraging! Thank you :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
