Did anyone have severe reflux before surgery? How is it afterwards?

I had reflux before surgery but had no symptoms except an irritating cough. After my sleeve surgery it was discovered that I had a good amount of scar tissue in my esophagas from several years of acid reflux. My surgeon removed the scar tissue and fixed a hernia I had. Post surgery I now KNOW that I have reflux because i have symptoms (heartburn) which are controlled with prescription prilosec 2X/day (cheaper to run through insurance than buy it over the counter although it is the same product). The only difference is I have to stop eating 2 hours before bed or I wake up with acid in the early morning hours. Spicy food for dinner seems to be a no-no for me too, but I can have it earlier in the day.

This is another thing I'm worried about as well...I deal with acid reflux/heartburn on a daily basis and sometimes it's even hard to control with meds. Hoping surgery makes it better and not worse!

Bummer that your reflux has reared it's ugly head again. Have you talked to anyone at OCC for additional things to try for your nighttime reflux? Friends of mine have found better relief from other PPI's (Protonix works best for them). Or maybe an antacid like Rolaids or Maalox taken just before bedtime could help so you wouldn't have to take as much PPI. Good luck and congrats with your progress!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
