I'm sick before surgery! HELP!

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is next Tuesday, March 11, and I woke up this morning with a sore throat, coughing up phlegm (sorry, not to be gross), and my eye was swollen and crusty. I'm heading to urgent care (at least for eye drops), but HELP! I don't surgery cancelled! Will they cancel it if I still have a sore throat?

Totally freaking out right now....

Calm down. You have 6 days to get yourself some recovery time. Go to Urgent Care and make sure you don't need an antibiotic. If you do tell them of your surgery date and see if you can get the one that you only need to take for 7 days or a liquid one since you won't be able to take pills after surgery. My husband and son just had something similar but without the eye problem. It lasted about 5/6 days. Drink fluids, run a vaporizer or cool mist humidifier in your room at night and drink LOTS of fluids. We all also took extra Vitamin C (Airbourne gummies). It prevented my youngest and I from getting sick and helped the other two get well quicker. I wish you a speedy recovery and congratulations on the upcoming WLS.

I got sick the day before I started my liquid diet 10 days before surgery. I had a bad sore throat, cough, phlegm, muscle weakness. Was diagnosed as viral and went home. 4 days later I went back and I got bronchitis. Was put on a zpak antibiotic and an inhaler for shortness of breath. Was in contact with surgeon throughout. Felt much better and before I was wheeled into surgery the anesthesiologist listened to my lungs and said they were ok. I was freaking out the entire time too, really stressed that I would have to reschedule. Thankfully I didn't.

Keep us posted! Feel better!

Hope you feel better today -- I am a big fan of zinc lozenges and ginger tea. Maybe this is your body detoxing and you can help it along with lots of liquids, plenty of rest. I don't do dairy or anything congestive when I'm not feeling well. Best wishes!

If you are not better by Monday you need to call your surgeon to see what he says. I know you don't want your surgery canceled but going under anesthesia sick could cause problems. Hope you feel better soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
