How to stop sugar cravings during AF?

Recommended Posts

OMG!! I cannot for the life of me stay away from sweets! I really had no problem and I was low -carbing but as soon as I start PMSing I need sugar!!! I just finished off a piece of cake. How in the world was I able to even eat that? I feel crappy and I don't want to do it again. I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue and how they take care of it

Wendy...I am almost 6 months out...slow loser and what doesn't help is sweets. I seem to always have several scoops of frozen yogurt, sometimes Cookies, it has to be at least once a day...I can't seem to break it......but I hear it's due to a lack of something...self control..yes...but a food or Vitamin or something that will help one to keep it in control. Anyone else know what it might be? Or tried?

It's like quitting smoking. A lot has to do with self control. Sugar is addictive. When you eat it all the time, you want it all the time. I too, get sweets cravings around that TOM. I've found that a banana and a small glass of pure oj can satisfy me. Yes, they have sugar too, but fruit is a naturally occurring sugar. So much better than the junky, refined sugars in cake and Cookies. I watch my calories in MyFitnessPal and it helps me stay away from those types of foods.

When it's my TOM I eat sugar free/fat free pudding - it's 60 calories and it helps with that chocolate urge that I get sometimes. You know what else is good - try a different kind of low fat yogurt, I like the key lime pie one, it's like 90 calories and that helps me too. Just a suggestion :) it kind of tricks my mind and makes me feel like I'm having a treat!

Try complex carbs....Like Laurabars..I know I spelled that wrong but they have the natural sweetness of fruit and Protein. They seem to help me when I am needing sweets.....

There are lots of recipes on Pintrest as well for them......Don't know what is wrong with my spelling today...oops!

Eating refined sugar only makes the problem continue.

I know I am still eating refined sugar at times.... :(

I get set off by artificial sweeteners such as sucralose (Splenda) which tell the brain more is coming. When I have an uncontrollable craving -- like at PMS time -- I can usually trace it back to something like a bar that had a long list of "diet" ingredients or having used Muscle Milk in a shake, etc. Sigh, I loved that Muscle Milk but after a shake like that (with lots if frozen peaches, yum!) I find myself hungrier than ever and questioning what was the point.

I have those 100 calorie packets of nuts which seem to do the trick stopping the nibbles rather than opening the floodgate of appetite. And I get the 100 Greek yogurts that have fruit with Steevia, a plant-based sweetener that works well for me. Good luck -- there's not one of us here who doesn't know what you're experiencing and sympathizes with you. Personally I wouldn't worry about the piece of cake -- don't beat yourself up! I am not on a diet -- the on or off mentality is a hard thing to break. It's what made me want to have all I could if I went off a diet because I knew I'd be back to depriving myself.

. Great list! And links at the bottom -- I emailed it to myself so I can go back later. Thank you. Magnesium keeps coming up for me.

I am the biggest sugar addict that ever lived in the United States and the only way you will stop craving it is if you quit eating it.. That mean even fruit until you have kicked that habit. No starchy carbs either. I know it's tough and just know that I know exactly what you are going through. There was never a piece of sugar that did not go through my lips. You just had surgery in January and if you want the weight to come off you have to stay away from sweets. I know people say everything in moderation well I don't believe that when you are losing. I never cheated once when I was losing weight. I can't eat sugar now because I know I will binge on it for weeks. You have to want the weight loss more then that piece of cake. You have to ask yourself when you go to reach for something sweet is this helping me or hindering me. If the second answer is your answer then you don't eat it.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
