Cold feet and fear of lack of discipline

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I haven't yet been assigned a surgery date for my gastric sleeve. I have completed all the preliminary steps for surgery and have received approvals all along the way. However, while I have always had reservations, I am getting very cold feet about the surgery. I am not sure what it is that surgery will provide except a lifetime of potential illness. I don't think I have been "hungry" but about 10X in my life. In fact, I often forget to eat at a mealtime. My discipline problems have been with sweets and eating regular meals. I'm terrified that I won't be able to maintain the discipline of all the food preparation needed after the surgery. I have asked physicians "HOW" the surgery changes metabolism, affects hormones, etc., and no-one can give me an answer. I see people who have had the surgery and they all look what my mother would have called "peek-id" (yellowing, waxy complexion). I'm asking for how it FEELS different and how easy it is to maintain the day-to-day life changes necessary to support and weight loss and weight management.

(For what it's worth, my BMI is 50 and I"m 65 yo. My gynecologic surgeon was the one to first suggest this as I have already had one bout of reproductive cancer (which has a higher occurrence rate in overweight females.) But now that the "reproductives" are out, they won't get cancer anymore, right?)

Any comments out there for one who is thinking about calling it off?

The morbidity rate of someone who has a 50 BMI is higher than the potential for complications with WLS. Someone once said, "How many people do you see walking around at 70 who are over 250 pounds?"For what it's worth, I have seen many people who have been successful with WLS, and none of them looked ill or waxy. I know I am looking pretty damn good! :)

That being said, if you are not ready for this surgery, don't let anyone force you into it. You will only be bitter, and if you're not committed to the work necessary to make it succeed, it won't.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
