Gastro-gastric Fistula

Recommended Posts

Didn't see if anybody else had this, but my RNY literally grew back together. If anybody doesn't lose weight after having RNY have this checked. I went 2 years and thought I was just a 5%er who doesn't lose very much weight. My physician got suspicious and did a endoscopy. The hole between my pouch and stomach was as large around as a quarter! I was feeding the stomach that had been by passed! That was when I had to have the revision. I lost 122 pounds after that.

II just had revision on March 12, 2014. To repair a fistula and an ulcer it caused. My original RNY was done on May 2, 2012. Two weeks out I developed a leak. Had to be put back in the hospital for a month with a picc line and tpn. Nothing by mouth. I had a gastro gastric fistula. The dr hoped it would heal on its own and close up. No such luck. Over the next year and half developed an ulcer because of the fistula feeding acid from old stomach to pouch. It was a large ulcer and would not go away with medicine. The revision has been done I'm 6 days post opt. My dr removed the upper part of the old stomach where the connection was. He had to take down the pouch and stretch the intestine to make a new pouch this takes care of the ulcer. The new pouch is the size of a golf ball. I'm doing really good. I had already dropped 118 lbs. I'm about 30 lbs from my goal. My only concern is that I loose to much and become unhealthy. I had gone through hell with the complications from the first surgery. I just pray and hope that everything goes good this time. It's been scary but if I had to do it over again I would. I'm in better shape then I've ever been in.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
