I have one cup of coffee every day mixed with my Protein Shake. I need the boost to get through the morning. .. however I did give up caffiene about 3 months prior to surgery and didn't drink any caffeine until about 4 months post op.

My dietitian said I couldn't have coffee during the pre-op diet stage or for a month post-op. At first it's mostly to detox from the caffeine, but after surgery it's because the caffeine is a stomach irritant. It can make your already stressed and swollen stomach hurt more. I'm two weeks post-op and the only caffeine I've had has been in the form of a cup of non-decaf tea this week at work. I felt fine after...but I know it's important to follow the guidelines given. My best advice is if you are dead set on your coffee, despite your doctor's instructions, give your stomach a week or two to heal and then ease back into the caffeine if you really feel like you need it. Listen to your body, it will tell you if it can handle it or not. Good luck :)

My doctor allows us to have regular coffee. It was listed under the approved drinks to have in my post op fluids list. I try not to drink it much though since it decreases my appetite.

I wouldn't be able to live without my coffee. I even get the click espresso coffee Protein mix. but I only drink 2 mugs of coffee in the morning and rarely have to have the Protein Drink. when It warms up I will love it iced.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
