March 2014 Fitness Challenge

Recommended Posts

So this thread inspired me and I went to sign up for a gym membership today. I called my pre op coordinator at my surgeons office and told her about it as well (we have gotten pretty close so I go to her about a lot of things). She had me give her a schedule of the days I will be going and she is going to check on me. So far I said I will go Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. I also walked about 40 minutes this evening while my daughter was at softball practice. It felt amazing!!

  • Bandista, do you remember the name of the Ted Talk? I would love to check it out. First day with the personal trainer tomorrow. Wish me luck! Better yet, wish me the will to get this done!

Upped my time with my trainer from 30min to an hour yesterday. Wow. Huge difference in how I felt leaving the gym. After 10 million leg exercises yesterday, I was sure I'd be super sore today and hobbling around. Woke up this morning and felt totally normal.

Exercising regularly is awesome.

3.5 hours down / 16.5 to go

Another day of p90x and eating according to nutritional goals required by the program . It is working and a lot of fun! Tony Horton is a hoot!!

I am also adding 500 deep air squats a day to my challenge. Not all at once. Every time I get up from my chair (every hour or so), I want to get in 50. It only takes a minute or so to do 50 deep squats and it helps elevate my pulse for a little bit, makes it easier to go sit some more, aligns the back, builds muscle and gives the whole body a mini work out. Not bad for a minute of time. :)

Willing Willing Willing -- you are doing it. You are willing! Here's that Ted Talk. When I get on the treadmill I do that raised arms thing as though I'm crossing a finish line, yippee! Instead of the dreading that used to go on. And you know, I think it's working. I am actually looking forward to exercise -- I plan it and execute it. Who the hell is the person? Definitely happier. And definitely losing weight. I'm pretty sure exercise is the secret ingredient. Best wishes to you.

My son does this -- he has a pullup bar in his doorway and whenever he leaves his room he does a certain number of pullups. Pretty amazing how it all adds up! I am going to make a sign for myself, "EIGHT MINUTES." So I go down to our basement and jump on the treadmill for another eight here and there throughout the day. In fact I think I"ll put the sign on the fridge. Right now! I'm not hungry these days (thank you, Band!) and I'm doing well with not eating if I'm not hungry, but even if I'm not indulging I still find myself at the fridge a ridiculous number of times per day. My feet take me there. I'll make 'em take me right down to that treadmill instead! Good luck with all your working out -- you are very inspiring.

Had a great day of hiking in Sedona. Such a beautiful and spiritual place. I stood on top of one of the rock formations in awe, not only of the beauty of Sedona but of myself and being able to do something that four months ago would not have been impossible. The possibilities ahead are limitless and I look forward to each milestone.

I bought a different car and have to get a new bike rack for it. The rack i want to get is out of stock. It won't be available until the end of March. That's okay. I will have to ride locally until I get it. Loving the change to daylight savings time. We have also had some decent weather this week. Come on Spring.

I spent most of this week working in the house and not in the gym. I need to remember to take time for myself and workout.

7 hours down/ 13 to go.

Two weeks so far of p90x 7 days a week. Nutrition still dialed in using mfp to track calories and, more importantly, the macros. I feel great. It is such a fun program with a lot of diversity and is helping build up the muscles and flexibility. No injuries at all. I try and go beast mode on lifting days, but definitely bring it on the cardio days as well. I say 7 days instead of 6 because I do the 1 hour x stretch on Sundays. It is definitely worth it!!

Update- 3rd week of p90x and loving it.

Even though it is hard work and sometimes hard to get started on any given day, I look forward to the 1-1.5 hours a day where I "bring it." No matter how I feel when I start, I am always feeling 120% when I am done. In a good way. Not every day is a hard workout. 3 days are hard core lifting days (includes an extra 15 minute ab routine each of these days for a total of about 75 min), 2 plyo metric cardio days, 1 yoga day and 1 stretch day (stretching for a whole hour-how cool is that!). The yoga and stretch days are nice because, well, there are days when I need a physical and mental break.

Eating is still about 1800 calories a day of very clean food choices split between 50% Protein, 30% carb and 20% fat. Looking at my Protein daily it averages about 250 g, most coming from powders but a lot coming from chicken also. I eat my carbs in the morning (6am) and around my workout (2 pm and 6pm). Some days my macros get off 2-5%, but MFP lets me track and figure out some minor adjustments to make to get the macros right.

As for results, my weight is down 8 # from the initial weigh at the start of the month (it first went up about 5-7# the first 2 weeks as my body adjusted to the p90x program), body fat down 7% and muscles are really growing on arms, shoulders chest and back. My waist is trimming up and my shoulders are getting broad, bringing out the tapered body composition. Overall, I like what this program is helping me accomplish as a vet (been at or around goal for a year now). Keep your eye on the prize everyone! Set goals.

I have gotten in 40 miles of riding. We had a break in the weather. I don't think I will get in the full 75 this month due to the weather. I am not giving up. Have to see what next weekend holds. I might get it in this month.

I'm up to 51 minutes on the elliptical and my target was to increase by 5 minutes/week from 30 minutes at the beginning of march. I am 6 minutes ahead of schedule!!! I worked out 6 days this week and 5 days the last 2 weeks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
