How much protein are you getting daily?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 months post op and because I am drinking 2-3 Protein Shakes a day to get my Protein count up, I am taking in 1000-1100 calories a day. I think this is too much. My original paperwork said I should be getting 92 grams of protein a day. So many people have different amounts, so curious.

I don't think you need that amount of Protein. I think around 75 will be enough.

I drink Premier Protein x 2 per day @ 30g per carton and then try to get Protein from food source....I'm only 5 weeks out so it's a bit tough for me right now.

I'm not sure about calorie intake at your stage but I'm sure someone will help with that soon...

Xx

Like you said everyone has different amounts. My surgeon and nut recommend 60g of Protein a day and 1200 calories.

Thanks for the input. I use My Fitness Pal to track my food. They are constantly telling me to eat 1200 calories.

I don't think My Fitness Pal takes into effect the special dietary requirements of bariatic patients. I ignore what my log tells me I need and concentrate on meeting the Protein goals my doctor has set for me. :-)

I changed my goals for Protein to over 90 on MFP. I am trying not to eat over 900-1000 cal, but so hard. I feel like I am hungry all the time. But last night was the first time I made myself throw up because my chewable Vitamin C got stuck. They chest pain was horrible. But doing good for 3 mo post op, know of people that happens to a lot.

I am 5 ft 4 in and based on that the doctor says after the two week post op, I will need about 60 mg Protein. Right now I am getting 90 and that in Premier shakes is 510 calories

How do you change your protein to over 90 on MFP?

I only figured out how to reduce my calorie goal

I've been using My Fitness Pal for over two years and highly recommend it. But like most food logging apps on the market, MFP uses a "one size fits all" formula for calculating calorie goals. And that formula was NOT developed for bariatric surgery patients. The good news is that MFP is extremely flexible and you can adjust values for just about everything - calories, macro nutrients (Protein, carbs and fat), even micro nutrients (Vitamins and minerals).

So the key to using MFP is to experiment a little until you find the calorie goal that results in the weight loss that you are trying to achieve. There really is no "one size fits all". For example, if your goal is to lose two pounds a week, you can configure that weight loss goal in MFP and it will give you a calorie goal. Try that goal for a week or two and see what happens with your weight. If you lose two pounds a week, great. If you lose less than that, adjust the calorie goal down, nice and easy, try a 100-200 calorie reduction. Then try that for a week or two and see what happens with your weight. It's a great way to customize MFP to your goals, your body and all the variables in your lifestyle. And it works like a charm! I lost 130 lbs in 14 months averaging just under 1300 calories a day. That was my number. With a little experimenting, you can find your number.

You can make some adjustments in the app on your phone. But the real power in customizing MFP is on their website where you can enter customized values for practically everything. Give it a try and if you have any problems post your questions or PM to me and I'd be glad to help.

Congratulations on your weight loss so far. You're gonna love the new you!

May I ask what you are eating to get that much Protein??

I eat a lot of high Protein meat, mainly for dinner. The only thing I really do is put unflavored Protein powder in my eggs every morning, if I switch out my eggs I will have a Greek yogurt for lunch. When I went shopping I looked at almost everything I bought and made sure I bought lots of high protein and low sugar/ fat free stuff.

We'll I'm almost 5 weeks out and can eat almost anything. I had to do Protein Shakes in the beginning until I was able to eat food.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
