I am 5 weeks post op and my Dr says I can have all solids except Pasta, breads, rice, tortillas, anything with grains, red meat and pork. I love pasta and bread. What are some substitutions? Does anyone eat these, even though Dr recommends you dont? What are meals I can make that does not include this?

There are things you "shouldn't" eat for optimal weight loss, and there are things you "can't" eat because they'll mess you up (sticking, puking and such). I can eat bread and Pasta if I take super small bites, but I really try not to eat them. Pasta and sauce in particular really make me gurglely and uncomfortable.

Cauliflower crust pizza is pretty good (you can google it and find different recipes for the crust, then do what you'd like with the topping). Using zucchini or spaghetti squash in place of pasta works (though they're not absorbent the way pasta is). You didn't mention potatoes, but I love smashed cauliflower in place of mashed potatoes. And honestly, I've done stuff like make tuna pasta salad without the pasta (tuna, mayo, chopped veggies), and it's pretty good stuff.

I just ate a slice of Hovis granary bread with butter and honey.

Should I be eating carbs? Probably not.

Do I feel crap if I don't have at least some? Totally.

I think its horses for courses. Optimal weight loss apparently follows a very low carb diet. I'm sorry, I can't do this. I start spinning out and having blurry vision and all sorts.

I do still follow the rules of Protein first, but for example, I had pulled pork for dinner. I served it with half a tortilla and a mixed salad. I like my veggies, I like my meat, but I need some carbs.

My weight, admittedly has been stalled for the last 8 weeks - but I'm down to having lost just over 60% of my excess weight at approaching 6 months. It does that at this juncture.

If I continue to stall, I'll re-evaluate. But for now and until I see my nutritionist.. This is the way my diet is rolling.

I am allowed to ea whole grains Light wheat bread, brown rice, sweet potato, baked potato, oatmeal, etc. But in small amounts., Of course Protein is the priority... My requirement is 65-70 grams of protein per day. That is approx 280 calories of my 800 calorie daily allowance. So the rest are healthy fats and carbs. For Breakfast I sometimes eat one slice of whole wheat 40 calorie bread with an egg . I do eat Beans on occasion, a small , small portion.. I don't like Pasta My nut does not believe in only eating protein as the main source of nutrition. But a good balance between protein, carb and healthy fats. I plan on increasing my caloric intake to 900 in the following two months and 1000 calories the month after. . My goal is get to 1200 calories in 3 more months. I prefer slow but sure .. But 41 pounds is not shabby either

. :). P.s. This is my journey back to health.. Others , I am sure , have other requirements.

Personally i have trouble with bread and Pasta. They don't agree with Sleevette. Do have half a slice of toast occasionally, but I am just plain scared of pasta. I used to be a real carb whore. Loved pasta and bread. Over that now, which is a good thing.

Don't forget, you get carbs in your vegetables, too.

I am still on soft solids and I am not allowed rice and Pasta due to people generally not tolerating them. I am apparently allowed some whole grain bread and I think tortillas, but when I eat them it's just nausea for days. The sleeve is forcing me to stay as low carb as possible.

Pintrest is a creat place to look for low carb alternatives.

If you are only 5 weeks out, after you eat your Protein and some veggies how would you have any room for bread? I didn't start eating anything starchy; bread, Pasta or potatoes until I reached my goal weight and even now I rarely have pasta or potatoes but do like to have tortillas, whole grain crackers and sometimes toast.

I never do bread or Pasta but I do buy low Carb tortilla /wraps..I might I have one or two a week with eggs and Turkey sausage inside...or ill make it crispy in the skillet and put low fat cheese in there and have a quesadilla..the wrap itself has 9 carbs..not horrible but not for everyday;-)

I know I had a very hard time tolerating any Pasta or bread until I was 3-4 months post op. My nutritionist said I could eat toasted bread if I wanted something earlier on but I didn't miss it. I used this to my advantage, because the truth of the matter is, the most effective diet for significant weight loss is a low carb diet. You want your body to be in a state of ketosis (look it up), that's how pound upon pound gets shed. Loading up on simple carbs (bread, rice, pasta) won't do you any favors with the scale. I'd say your focus should be on meeting Protein goals and eating some veggies and fruit if the Protein alone doesn't fill you up. There will always be time for grains later.

But for the sake of throwing ideas out there, my go-to lower carb side dishes are: cauliflower rice, spaghetti squash, and zoodles (julienne zucchini). I hope this helps!

I am 9 weeks out and have not had anything on your list except Pork. The pork was a BBQ Pork Shoulder that I shredded into pulled pork. No Problem eating that, and a little hamburger done taco style.

I have been intentionally avoiding Pasta, rice, potatoes and bread for awhile. At least until I get closer to goal weight. I am still trying to eat 50-60 carbs per day. It is working well for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
