Update to my journey

Recommended Posts

As I think about it, my real journey started in late November of 2013. That's when I made the decision to attend one of the seminars put on by one of our local hospitals. Because I am older 67 at present, I had many concerns if this was the right way for me to go. I had only remarried 2 years ago to my high school sweetheart and she was content with the way I am. I have always had a weight issue and have lost hundreds of pounds over the years. Like everyone else I loose easily, but gain it all back to easily also. So I saw my surgeon in December and made the decision t go thru the process to see if I qualify and if I can make the changes necessary to be successful. I first had to go in for the psych. evaluation. Two sessions later I was cleared by the doctor. Next came the Nutritionist and the Pulmonary doctors for their evaluation. Three weeks ago I had my upper GI series and Endoscopy done [due to Barretts] Next on my list was an ultrasound for a slight heart murmur that was found. My final check in was with the cardiologist to go over the results of my ultrasound...Two weeks ago I went in for my sleep study that was done due to my sleep apnea.. Now I am finally getting to the end of these appointments with my appt. for the results of my sleep study tomorrow. Up to this point , all doctors have cleared me for my surgery. As soon as my study results are confirmed, I expect to be cleared and my doctor should forward to my insurance company. I expect to finish this journey in June after my return from visiting my daughter in Austria in May. I will be 68 when I complete this and my age is still a concern for me. Any other oldies out there who have gone thru this and have had similar concerns, I would love to hear from you. As soon as I have my approval and surgery date, I will update everyone. This blog has been so much help to me in coming to my final decision. I so enjoy reading about all your concerns and the information that you all put out. I have come to realize that I am not alone in my feelings. Please keep your comments coming...so very much appreciated!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
