My doc or nut has never mentioned one!! I'm just curious what some average goal weights are for a large framed 5'6" woman? Also I would like to keep some meat on my bones so I was thinking 175? I have several friends that weight and height that I think look fantastic! Or does that seem too big? Ahhh I just don't know !!!!

Hi!!

I am 5' 6"

SW: 253

CW: 153

Age: 54

Surgery: 5/31/13 (9 months out)

My goal is 150 (3 more pounds) because at 5' 6" that puts me at a healthy normal BMI of 24.9

Interesting question - my doc said based on the average loss that I would settle in at about 180 pounds. This was based on losing a percentage of my excess weight. I didn't want to hear 180 pounds - I wanted to hear 150 pounds. I left there saying, "I'm not going to be average. My level of effort won't be average."

Here's what I didn't know - my body looks different as I lose weight as compared to previous weight loss. I believe it's because I'm reducing my body fat %. An example - I can fit into clothes at my current higher weight than I could at a lower weight.

So, even though I set my goal number at 150 pounds, it's less important to me 3.5 months after surgery than it was when I first started.

My personal opinion is that numbers on the scale are just that - numbers. There are so many variables. I don't have a number goal. When my body tells me it's at a good weight, that will be my goal.

My doc did not give me a goal weight, either. However, at the psych eval, that doc told me I would likely land at 172-ish, provided I have average weight loss. I, too, am 5'6". I am shooting for lower than that, but as I go through this journey, I truly don't know where I will end up....what I will feel comfortable with.

Unlike McButterpants, I am finding that I cannot fit into sizes at this current weight like I did when I was previously at this weight. I'm bigger at this weight than before. For example, I cannot get into many 16's and I could before at 190-some pounds.

I read on here the other day that someone was slipping into 16's at her new weight of 234 pounds. Just another example of how every body is so different.

The longer I am on this journey, I discover I know less than I thought I did. The whole thing is a mystery because there are no norms.

My surgeon has also never mentioned a goal weight. My own original goal 150 which seemed like a stretch to me. Now its 135 which would put me in the normal range for my height and a 25% BMI. When I get there I guess I will know if its the right weight for me or to keep going.

I love that last statement...so true. I'm not as smart as I thought I was!!!! :-)

Thanks ladies ! I definitely agree with the diff shaped bodies thing! I'm down 35lbs and have not had any change in clothing size yet but I fit into 26/28 ad have some 24 and even a 20 pants that fit ! I can't wait to feel and see a change in my size and then maybe I will have an idea of goal. I got down to 259 once as an adult and I didn't feel any smaller and still wore size 22 on average though and I would really like to get into non plus clothes !

I understand. I dropped 40 lbs since surgery and went clothes shopping yesterday (it was too soon) and found that my size 20 Lane Bryant pants are fitting better but that's it so far. I can't wait to say goodbye to Lane Bryant once and for all :)

I was a 22 when I had surgery - I was in denial about this as I was wearing 20's. I had my surgery in mid-November and was able to purchase 18's right after Christmas. They were a bit tight - to the point I told my husband that he shouldn't dry them. Now, two months later, they are falling off me and need to buy new ones again.

It's weird, though, I still feel like the Fat Girl. It's true what they say - this is a journey to fix your brain, too!!!!!!

Just my opinion, but I would shoot for a BMI under 25, and 175 is pretty far above that. I think you can aim lower and still be successful. Don't be afraid :)

I'm 5'6" and 135 now. I wear a size 6 or small in most clothes from Target, Walmart, Macys, and Ross Dress For Less. I'm small boned and small chested but I do have wide hips. You can see how that weight looks on me in the pics in my gallery.

Everyone is different. I would follow your post op plan and evaluate you goal weight again as you get closer. If you are comfy with a goal of 175, set that as your goal and when you get there you can decide if that's where you want to be or if you'd prefer to lose more.

My Dr. told me that once we get to overweight BMI it's more important to our health to exercise than get to a lower BMI. She had some chart that showed overweight BMI people who exercised were healthier than normal BMI people who didn't exercise.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
