What is realistic weight loss with the sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Sometimes setting such rigid goal weights upon ourselves ultimately leads us to feeling like failures if we do not meet them. Perhaps figuring out a bit higher weight goal just for yourself might be a little better on your psyche. Not to say you'd never make your lower goal... it's just that I've been around a long time and I've seen those who don't make their super low weight goals suffer mentally for it.

All that said, I do believe that with the VSG any goal is achievable. But I think that everyone's number one goal should just be to become fit and medically healthy.

I'm 5'6" and started at 256. My goal was 150, then I thought 145 would be great judging by a friend with a similar build and same height. I blew past that down to 132 and had to work at not losing more. I was getting gaunt on top but still had thick thighs. I had Lipo before some reconstructive surgery I'd planned and it messed up my metabolism so I bounced up to 145. In the course of trying to diet to get it off I kept gaining on up to 155. So I've got back to the Protein first eating basics, exercising, and am going to see my surgeon today to make sure everything is ok.

I looked good at 130-135. Once I get back down there and have my thighlift I'm guessing I'll stay around 130. I am very narrow with a light frame. Everyone has a weight that's going to look good on them, I think the range is pretty wide even at 5'6".

My surgeon never gave me a number. His nurse did, though, by accident maybe?

I think I recall him saying that if you were at 70% success, then you were doing far better than average. I asked him based on what? He wasn't clear, but did reinforce that he would not give me a number.

I said my goal weight at 5'3" was 115 lbs (starting weight was around 218). He said it was possible, but I would probably have to do a lot of regular, dedicated exercise but even then I probably wouldn't be happy at that weight (too small). Then he asked how would I feel if I stabilized around 142 and I said, "Delighted."

I have had several long plateaus or stabilizations at 172, 164, 158, 148, 142, 138, 132. Today I weighed in at 126 and I'm really not even trying. I'm not concerned yet, but I really don't want to go much lower. Skin is becoming an issue.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
