Pre-Op Diet Question regarding low-cal meal and replacement shakes

Recommended Posts

My diet program includes a week of replacing two meals with the Protein Shakes, and having one meal around 300 calories. I'm curious what worked best for people in regards to when to eat the "real" meal? Did you eat your "real" meal for Breakfast, lunch or dinner/supper?

I'm typically a breakfast person, hungry as soon as my eyes open. However, I'm not a big fan of sweets in the morning, doughnuts (while yummy) don't work for a full breakfast for me. My problem is that the shakes I've tried all tend to be on the sweet side, so I'm a little leery of starting my day that way.

I am doing the same pre-op diet as you, for 10 days... I'm on day 3.

My surgeon suggested the "meal" for lunch. So I've been having a shake for Breakfast and dinner.

I guess you could try it out and see what works best for you if they didn't give you any instructions about what meals when. I agree, it's kind of hard doing the sweet shake in the morning.

Good luck!

I was allowed 2 shakes and one lean and green meal - my doc wanted that meal to be dinner. My dinner was 5-6 ounces of lean meat and 1/2 cup of veggies.

I remember someone here saying they asked their doc if they can split their meal into two and their doc approved. My doc wouldn't approve it. Sometimes my dinner was at 5:00 pm.

It takes a few days for your body to get used to the new way you're eating, so be patient. I drank a lot of green tea (sweetened w/ Splenda) to help keep the hunger at bay.

Best of luck to you!

That sounds about right - I think I was doing something similar to that.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
