I am confused over the protein drinks

Recommended Posts

HI Folks,

Day 11 post op - feel great - some gas pains still moving around but nothing serious - HOWEVER, the Protein drink has me confused. I was banded by Dr Kuri in Mexico - and have been following his food plan to the tee. I have not been drinking a Protein Drink?? I noticed some of the bandsters discussing Protein drinks are banded a long time. Does everyone need to drink a Protein Drink daily?? I am mainly drinking Soups and Water / tea right now. I start on soft food Tuesday :)

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!

:clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

I am pretty sure that the Protein Drinks are not going to hurt. I am not 100% certain at which stage they are allowed, but I would probably say that if anything, they are not going to harm you. I think you just have to make sure they are not full of sugar, but they are more full of Protein (hence protein drink). Some are better than others, you have to read the lable. Hope this helps.

I was told to start drining the Protein drinks two weeks prior to my surgery. My doctor also told me that most individuals don't get enough protein during the day anyway, so anyone can drink them.

Also, if working out, they are very important in lean muscle growth and development.

Protein is started immediately and continues, the object is to have at least so many grams or protein a day, I just forgot how many. Help me out here folks. I like a protein smoothie for a quick pick me up, makes a nice substitute for the "fast food" places.

I used to have a hard time getting solids down in the morning, so instead of skipping a meal, I had a Protein drink for nutritional value. Just don't live on them. The point is to be able to eat solid food-just less of it. I am drinking one as I type! (I am on 3 days of liquid after my fill). Just read the labels, as some do have a lot of sugar.

I had a nutrition class this past week. They told us 60 gms protein/day. Also told us to try VHT Extreme smoothies. 1 serving of the 'chocolate dream' has 170 calories, 6 g carbs and 35 g Protein.

We were told to use as we liked.

Hope this helps!

My doctor recommends the his patient drink at least one protien drink a day to ensure that they are getting enough protien. If you cut back too much on your intake of protien your body will digest protien from itself in the form of muscle loss. We all want to loss fat and not our lean muscle mass. Try to get your recommeded amount of protien each day.

Good luck and hang i there,

JBacher RN

I am told to consume 75 grams of Protein daily AT MINIMUM!! And, that no one should go below 60 grams ever!! You can/will lose your lean weight instead of your fat weight. I am using Protein Shakes now due to liquid diet, but after I'm allowed "solids" I will "eat" my protein first then other food. If my "solid" food does not give me enough there are a variety of supliments, one being the shakes, there's bars, fruity drinks, powder you can add to stuff, the "healthyweightsupermarket" has things like..oatmeal and pudding that are high protein too.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
