Banded 2/24 and have questions!

Recommended Posts

I got banded on Monday 2/24. I've done really good sticking to liquids all day: warm liquid for Breakfast, 1/2 cup broth for lunch and sips of Protein Shake for dinner (so far 5lbs down)! I've been sleeping on and off all week just because sleep helps heal faster! Here is my dilemma (well several). I'm so sluggish and tired to remember all my questions! Lol!

Problem 1: I've had a headache for two weeks straight and this not eating thing is making it worse! Help?!? Plus my headache meds aren't working!!!

Problem 2: Also I am freaking starving!!!!!!!!!!! I managed to eat some Lipton noodles (I recommend cuz they are teeny tiny) with the broth and it has stayed down. The Protein shakes do NOT make me feel full plus I feel stupid chewing it since I crave that sensation!!! The noodles today did the job so my question is what else do you suggest to help with the full feeling and the chewing sensation I am craving? How are creamy mashed potatoes (well blended the hell out of them with gravy and milk)? Milkshakes? Anything else?

Am I the only one craving tuna fish, egg salad, mashed potatoes, bacon, chicken, cheeseburger and Pasta all on one sandwich?

Problem 3: pills, pills, pills!!!! I usually take all my meds at night but I'm having issues with it! After 4 cut pills I can take anymore!!!!! Any suggestions? I'm going to try to spread them throughout the day as well!

Problem 4: Work?!? I go back to work on Tuesday, I'm so scared that I'm still going to be in pain and not moving very fast! Any suggestions for going back to work? I am a speech pathologist so I'm up and down with kids all day!

Thanks for letting me rant and rave! Didn't realized I had so many question!!!!!

First of all you are going to be hungry. If you are supposed to be Clear Liquids then don't sway from your doctors plan. You stomach needs to rest so it can heal. When you add food other then Clear Liquids the stomach has to work hard to process it and your sutures need time to adhere to the stomach. Keep drinking and find other things to do that do not include food. Right now you are going to be hungry. Just wait until your doctor gives you the ok to eat. We all went through it. Its a short time out of your life to become healthy. Stick to the plan your doctor put in place for you and this part will be over before you know it. You will look back and think it really wasn't that bad. Your head is hurting because your body is detoxing from all the crap you have put into your body. You will have a headache that medication will not help. Try some ice or a heating pad which ever feels better. It will be behind you before you know it.

several ppl have had to go back to work quickly. their pain problem was the up and down and pain caused by the port moving around. we have suggested a abd. binder or back brace turned backwards to hold and protect your abdomen. you are going through hell but we have all been there. drink more liquids. you can drink as much as you need. I made homemade stock and dipped into it all day long. sugar free Jello, tea coffee, popsicles, call your doctor for a list of liquids he allows. I wish you luck through this phase. it will pass.

Dehydration also causes headaches. Stick to liquids only. Follow what your doctor says.

I was banded 2/21 and went back to school on 2/24. It was hard and I hurt because of GI gas pain and port incision pain, but I am a week out now and feeling much better. Feel it out and see how you do.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
