vdub_tx 92 Posted February 28, 2014 Well my doctor says generally 80-100 pounds overweight will make your BMI high enough but really you should just go in for a consultation. There are a lot of factors involved in deciding if you're a good candidate. I don't know where you're located but in my area consultations are generally free of charge, which made it easy for me to find a surgeon that I liked. 1 PdxMan reacted to this

Carlotta1 401 Posted February 28, 2014 Depends on your insurance also. My required a bmi40 or above. Some insurances will cover bmi 35 or above if co-morbitites exist i.e. High Bp, sleep apnea, diabetes, etc.
sammyblingss 84 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) So I'm 5'9 female I weight 255, would I be a good candidate for this procedure, how much should u be over your ideal weight to qualify You should contact your medical insurance company to see if they even cover cover the procedure and which one they might cover. Most companies don't cover it at all. I called right away to make make sure (cigna) and then I went online to pull up bariatric policy requirements and saw the break down of how they would cover the surgery. I had to have a bmi over 40 - or a bmi of 35 with sleep apnea or high BP or blah blah. Since I didn't have anything else, I went in with a bmi over 40. Good luck!! But call first! They will get you exactly how you can qualify. I was 243 date of surgery and I'm 5'5 Edited February 28, 2014 by sammyblingss

Miz Z1 52 Posted March 2, 2014 My BMI was 35 but I also had sleep apnea and was borderline diabetic. I was fortunate that my insurance covered the sleeve;however, I wanted the sleeve so badly I'd decided that I would self pay if I had to. Look for a hospital situation where there is a lot of support. My hospital had nutritionists, shrinks, and surgeons as part of the weight loss center. There were many pre surgical meetings so we knew what to expect and how to manage ourselves leading up to, through, and post surgery. They even have a monthly support group for all of their post surgery patients once they've passed the 6 month mark. Everything helps. Good luck to you
