Recommended Posts

I am trying to buy the vitamins/supplements from the list that Nina sent me before I go for surgery... Did you all start in your Vitamins right away when you got home? I'm looking at some liquid ones, but there are SO MANY out there!! Can you guys tell me what brands worked for you?

Multivitamin (2x day)

Zinc Lozenge Gel Caps (50mg every 3rd day)

Iron (100mg everyday while fasting???)

calcium citrate (600 mg every 12 hr)

B Complex (1 pill every week)

Hey Jen40 - great question! I'm scheduled with Dr. Aceves in March and have been wondering the same thing. Holy cow - it seems like a lot of Iron, doesn't it? I've been looking at pureformulas.com but haven't purchased anything yet. I need to before my surgery because there is nothing available where I live. Good luck to you! I'll be waiting for an answer to your question, too.

I forgot - I have been taking Thorne Cal-Mag Citrate for the past couple years that I highly recommend. My ND recommended it to me. It's an effervescent powder that has a light, citrusy flavor that I like. One serving has 500 mg Vitamin C, 500 mg calcium citrate, and 200 mg magnesium. Getting enough magnesium helps me sleep better, too. It's about $15 for 42 servings. I buy through pureformulas.com but I think Amazon may also have it.

Sorry for another post! I'm a scatterbrain today. For the Vitamin B my naturopathic doctor also recommended "Methyl Factors" for after surgery. I just ordered some a few days ago but haven't received it yet. It's a little pricey but my ND only recommends high quality supplements.< /span>

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
