Got my surgery date and.....help?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I got my surgery date...March 5th! My problem is I am dreading the nothing but Clear liquids for 2 days. Does anyone have any suggestions to help get through this? I know it's going to be very hard, but does anyone have suggestions as to how to counteract the horrible hunger? I tried to do a day of just liquids (not even clear) and was so starving that I overate at dinner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most clear liquid diets include sugar-free Jello and sugar-free popsicles. Check with your doctor's office to make sure these are OK. You CAN do this. You MUST do this. :)

I can have those...should I binge on them to keep my stomach full? I can do this! I will do this!

I think your mindset might be making you more nervous about this then you need to be. Don't worry about keeping your stomach full or it not being full. I think the more you think about it the worse it will be. Find ways to occupy your time, don't be idle. Start changing the importance of food now, and take control. You CAN do this.

It's only two days, you are strong and want this surgery. Do everything in your power to ensure a good outcome. If your doctor wants you on two days of liquids, do it. It doesn't matter that someone else's doctor had different instructions. Stock up on low sodium broths and sugar free ice pops, but dont' keep thinking about what your not eating.

Every hour that passes brings you one closer to surgery. We all need to focus on the big picture and not just the tough parts we endure to get us there.

Are you also doing a full liquid diet prior to the 2 day clear diet? I'd think it would be very difficult to go from full eating to 48 hours of just clears. And regarding the clears, I used lots of homeade broths to get me through. Different flavors of broth bad I doctored them with herbs an spices.

@ Inittothinit...No, going from regular diet to clear. My surgeon only requires a pre op 2 wk. diet if your BMI is over 50. I plan on keeping very busy, I just have a really hard time falling asleep with a growling stomach. I do find myself focusing on it too much. I guess I'm just going to have to focus on the positives and stuff Jello when I'm really hungry.

Maybe do a day or 2 of some low carb Protein shakes and bars to transition to the clears? In addition to the homeade and doctored broths, I also used natural apple juice diluted about 30percent with Water. The good news is that once you are on the other side, you likely won't have major hunger ever again like preop.i was sleeved on Monday and just getting Water down is a chore right now. This kind of full is something that really can't be described. It has to be felt.:):)

When you fast, it takes around two full days before you feel the 'runners high' and can do it easily. Unfortunately, you will not have that much time to feel this. I say go to bed early for those two days and read...no TV. Just a minor sacrifice for a great event!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
