Buying Medications in Mexico

Recommended Posts

So since I'm going to be in Mexico anyway I thought I would stock up on some of my pricey prescription meds since it would be cheaper there. I have asthma and need to use Qvar- about one inhaler monthly ($50 AFTER insurance!!)... do you guys know if I need a prescription with me to buy this? Maybe this is a dumb question, but I wasn't sure how that worked...

Okay I actually found the answer to my own questions- seems like if you need a prescription in the US you need one in Mexico. I'll try to get a copy from my doctor!

I have gotten antibiotics without a prescription.

If you take your original bottles/ inhalers you don't need an actual prescription. Only if it's a narcotic/controlled substance, you will need a prescription from your actual Dr. and a prescription from a Mexican Dr.

Annie has it right. You only need a prescription for controlled substances. I stock up on Retin A and antibiotics when I'm there. Oddball US drugs are not cheaper there, though. I checked out Latisse (the eyelash stuff that is $120 for a 30 day supply here), but it wasn't any cheaper there :( I think vet meds are much cheaper there, however.

Speaking of self-medicating, you can get Cuban rum in Mexico, which is divine. Can't get it here in the states and it's much better than Bacardi and reasonably priced.

Not that I drink with the sleeve, oh no, I never do that....... ;)

HAHAHA funny that you bring up Cuban rum because my boyfriend already has plans to buy it there! Hopefully a few months post op I could try it.

Guess I'm definitely going to stock up on the asthma inhalers then!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
