The waiting game!

Recommended Posts

I saw my surgeon the other day for the last time before the surgery. He said all my paper work was in with the exception of my 6 month supervised weight management program. So his office was going to submit my claim to my insurance......I'm just waiting on an answer now!!!!! So what are you guys doing to pass the time?

-I've been on this site of course!

-Looking a you tube videos which might not be a good idea!!

-Researching bariatric products

-Reading labels, recipes and rereading everything that has been given to me by my weight loss program

It's hard waiting but knowing my date is there and just waiting for that day is harder for me i guess cause I want this so bad? Well Good luck hope the insurance approves it quick for you!!!

I am anxious, a little nervous, but not really, I have to start my 2 week diet next Wednesday and I have been looking up Protein alternative drinks in case I can't drink milk but other than that I am just doing the same old thing everyday. I just wish I could push a button to fast forward the next 2 weeks?

The wait between my final appointment and scheduling my date was nerve racking. I just researched as much as I could and started buying some new clothes here and there. Once I got my date I started buying Protein and trying recipes. My surgery is on Tuesday and I'm not nervous but I am questioning myself. I know I'm doing the right thing though. I'm sure I'll be a nervous wreck by Monday.

My advice to you would be to get your house ready for when you're going to come home. I had to rearrange some furniture. And rest as much as you can. I've had quit a few restless nights so I've been going to bed early when I can. Good luck with everything! I hope you get your days soon.

I received surgical approval yesterday, February 27th. The surgeon said to expect a surgery date within the next one to three months. I've already purchased my 3 week supply of. Optifast shakes. I have to drink four a day and nothing else for 21 days leading up to surgery. Liver shrinking and all that jazz, lol. I bought all the Vitamins for the first two months post op- either liquid or chewable. I've even bought smaller bowls and plates to use after surgery. I've read about eight books on Roux-en Y gastric bypass. I'm pretty much set, ready to go. I am wishing that it'll be one month vs the three month wait. I started my process in May 2013. So eager for the actual surgery. I'm so excited I'm having trouble sleeping. Anyone else experiencing this?

Congratulations to both of you guys for the surgery and approval! I'm very happy for both of you! You guys are being very proactive! I need to learn from you!!!!

Francinleclaire..... Why do you have to wait 1-3 months foa an actual date? Seems like a very long time!

It's normal in Ontario. I'm actually lucky the process is only going to take one year total. I know of people waiting two to three years for surgery. Our OHIP, (Ontario Health Insurance Plan), is paid for by our income tax deductions. So no out of pocket costs, or insurance to deal with for approval. But it makes wait times for any kind of surgery long. And gastric bypass is considered to be an "elective" surgery, believe it or not, lol. My cousin had GB done at the same hospital three years ago and her duration from beginning consult to surgery was only nine months. She was lucky. A friend of mine, had hers there too, last August. And her duration was over two years. So, if mine only takes a year total, I'm ok with that. But I have been wanting surgery for ten years. So the waiting seems like it's been forever. The Ottawa hospital has only been performing gastric bypass for about four years. Before that, patients had to travel to Toronto to have it done. About a five hour drive. We're lucky to have it in our city now. But I'm still frustrated with the waiting game. I'm a naturally impatient person, so that doesn't help. Lol.

Wow! I'm in Chicago Illinois and the 6 month weight loss program is the requirement for most insurances. 6 months is the average for GBS for my insurance and I feel that's a long time. A year would feel like for ever for me. Lol then again everybody is different.

Yah, a year does seem like it's taking forever. I will be happy when I get the call with my surgery date. I have prepped as much as I can. Bought everything that I need post-surgery. I'm not working, so time is virtually standing still at this point. Any suggestions on how to pass the time? Lol.

I am so psyced cause mine only took like 2 months cause I had previously had the lapband and I didn't have to do all the stuff i had to do for the first surgery. I am so totally ready. I have cleaned my house and started buying everything for post surgery. I start my liquid diet this Wednesday and then the 19th I have my surgery. I can't wait to be post op.

Lily once you do all your pre-recs then they submit to your insurance and depending on insurance it could be a week could be a couple weeks shouldn't take longer than 2 weeks to get approval then you get a date 2 weeks away depending on your doctor and the liquid diet they put you on? So your biggest thing is staying on top of your insurance company if that's how your going threw this and if you don't have an approval after a week I would call them and require about it!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
