Pre Op Diet is killing me

Recommended Posts

Ok so I just DL this app today after a pre surgery diet crisis. My first appointment was almost a year ago, so it's been quite the journey. But I'm like 4 days away from surgery (Three days into the diet) and I'm panicking about food. I'm 6'1 350lbs and have been doing well so far just eating better (due to diabetes). But now I'm on a diet that all went all the window.

I cheated today, after laying in bed for 4 hours just thinking about food I'll never have again. I know "if you can't handle the pre-op diet then how are you gonna do the post op". But I'm just wondering if anyone is going through the same thing.

(I posted something like this in bypass by accident sorry, I'm really getting the sleeve)

I went through the same thing, its your mind playing tricks on you and attempting to sabotage your new choice...that's just it, A CHOICE, I had to keep reminding myself that this was my choice not a diet but a lifestyle change and I am committed to it. I cheated, kept creating excuses and finally I had to write a goodbye letter to my old self/habits/ways with food and reestablish control...ITS MY CHOICE, MY LIFE, MY DESIRE AND I REFUSE TO LET FOOD OVERPOWER MY WILL TO BE HEALTHY! I am having surgery in the morning and believe it or not I avoided temptation and stuck to my liquids today. I have to make the decision to give myself and this tool a chance, I do not want to stick to the evil I know...it isn't comforting me, its killing me. Best wishes to you on your journey and remember this is your choice, an act of love not desperation.

For food addicts, the idea of changing your eating habits can seem overwhelming. I had a lot of the same issues before my surgery. I just kept reminding myself why I was doing this, how terrible I felt at over 300 pounds and what I realistically expected to be able to accomplish with less weight on my body. Change doesn't magically happen overnight, it takes commitment and hard work, but I can guarantee it will be worth it when you see the scale move lower and you have to get new clothes because everything is falling off your body!

I also decided that no foods were on the "never eat list" unless they made me ill post surgery. I have a small portion of the "bad" foods and have been surprised that it is satisfying. Knowing that I wasn't removing anything forever, but just for a time, has helped me realize that I don't need food to cope with life. Pre-surgery I wasn't sure, but now 9 months later, I feel so much more in control of my food choices. This tool has worked well for me, and I know it can for you too! Good luck, you CAN do it!

I also cheated during my pre-op diet, and had to comes to grips with my food addiction. It's like alcoholism... Every day will be a challenge, but I always tell myself "hi, my name is Kevin and I am a food addict". It reminds me that this isn't easy and choices need to be made.

I am now 13 weeks post-op and I have lost 75 lbs!! Making a choice to eat healthy is much easier now, but still must make a decision to eat Protein and fruits and vegetables rather than Cookies and chips and ice cream.

You can do it!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
