Questions for my surgeon.

Recommended Posts

My pre op consult with my surgeon is next week. I think I have most of the basic questions. Such as recovery time, diet, and excercise. Is there anything else it should ask?

Here's the small list I made and asked my surgeon yesterday. To be honest he covered most everything I was wondering. Hope it helps!

Thank you. I didn't think about the drains.

I asked what, if anything, (once he had begun surgery) would cause him to stop and not complete the surgery. Found out that had only happened twice in the thousands of surgeries he had performed once due to ascites (I think that was due to cirrhosis of the liver) the other was the patient was very large and he didn't feel he could complete the surgery safely.

I am scheduled for surgery in a couple weeks and have my pre-op meeting Monday. I am wondering if my doctor will be offended by me asking questions about the boogie size and if he oversews. He is very well respected in our area ....what has been the experience for most of you

I'm sorry but what do you mean by boogie size? What is boogie?

A boogie is the tool they put down your throat and Into your stomach and it is used as to gage where the surgeon cuts and staples. Someone on this site had posted a helpful pic showing a comparison of the boogie sizes to compare. It really isn't that much o a difference between the sizes.

Thank you. I didn't think about the drains.

I would be curious to hear what other people's surgeons say. My surgeon said the only time he would use a drain is if there was an internal leak. In other words, I'm praying I don't have drains when I wake up from surgery!

How long before I can drive? When can I start to workout?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
