Post-honeymoon hunger

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved two months ago and I honestly get hungry. I have head hunger too but this is belly-empty hunger, though no where near pre-sleeve hunger levels.

My question is if I have hunger now will it get worse once the honeymoon (6 months) is over? I am hoping that this is my normal hunger level.

Have you advanced onto soft foods yet? Sometimes this hunger is also a cue for your dr to advance you if you are doing well on liquids and such

Could be acid reflux. Sometimes it mimics hunger. Are you on an acid reducer. Im 15 months out and still take acid reducer pills. The hunger does get more the futher you are out in most patients.

Thank you. Yes I am cleared for all foods. My dr is more aggressive than most and was cleared for solids on week 3. I also take Prilosec everyday because I read on here that could cause the hunger. Been doing that since before surgery.

Girl, me too. I joke that I woke up from surgery hungry. I am exactly as you describe. I feel hunger, but it's not as intense as pre-surgery.

I'm in my 5th month and I'm close to being able to live off 3 meals. Sometimes I still need an afternoon snack. And I will often have a diet hot chocolate before bedtime. But I definitely feel hunger. I'm just dealing with it better because it's not as intense.

I was told it's normal to get hungry and have an appetite - now you have to eat filling Proteins and you shouldn't get hungry after less than 3-4 hours... I'm having many of the same fears; sometimes I feel like I'm just STARVING and then I eat two slices of turkey and I'm totally full and sated for 4+ hrs. So the question is, are you getting all your Protein and are you eating when hungry... And how often are you hungry?

Real hunger came back for me in about 6-8 weeks. Wish I was one of the lucky ones who went months or even a year. It is not as intense through and that's good. And am satisfied with a lot less. Now head hunger that will always be the main problem. After all I did not get obese because of real hunger.

I am in the same position as PLaywithworldchamps. My hunger came back right away, only now I was better able to control it. Before I was like a horse with a feed bag on and going to town with my food. I literally inhaled my meal in less than 10 minutes!! Now, when I am hungry I am able to nibble on a cheese stick and not have to worry about becoming "hurricane hungry" eating everything around me.

Another thing is that often time when we think we are hungry we are really thirsty. I know my dr said to drink 64 oz of Water per day, but my body wants me to drink about 90 oz a day. When I have drink an adequate amount for my body I know that I am doing good with hunger. Each body reacts differently and I have noticed that when I was heavier I needed more Water than I do now.

Another thing is head hunger. If you know that you are satisfying yourself nutritionally, then head hunger is probably rearing its head and now, you have to be able to be stronger willed than your brains automatic desire of wanting to grab more food or junk foods. Are YOU in control or are you putting your body back on auto-pilot?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
